with alittle pace upfront (unlikely) and a 2kg claim from mallyon (if he retains the ride) will see ladysea beat these.

Don't reckon it matters who is on her back(paps or the new boy)..from that barrier it's hard to see anything getting in her way on the run home down the Belmont straight...Just a matter of what price you can get for her...If anyone is offering 4.50 like last week on LG I'll take some...

I'll have to put my hand up as the idiot who quoted that price. In my defense that was when it was an 11 horse field and Grand Nirvana was going to get on King Kool Kat's back and I saw LG being too far back to haul in our best WFA horse of the last couple of years. Either way it clearly wouldn't have mattered!

Think you'll get the 4.50 for Ladysea without a problem though. It's last win, while impressive was set up for it to do just that. The horse who ran 2nd to it isn't exactly what you'd call a great form line!

   meathead, that's fine mate, no need to quantify it..We alll put a few outlandish opinions on here from time to time..Even with the scratchings i was still on Grand Nirvana!!!...LG just smashed them easily.. His trial said it and all he did was come out and let us all know that he was here for a few good kills and then come back in Spring and have a real campaign.

I actually went back to Ladysea's last campaign and as long as she isn't on the fence(barrier 7 so no chance) she should absolutely trounce them down the straight out wide....I'll even make a more outlandish statement than both your $4.50 quotes (more chance LS getting it than LG ever was going to, but still think she will be under that) that Ladysea will get them with 50m to go and DMac will call her the winner with 20m to go....after saying she is a mile back and no chance on the turn coming into the straight!!!!! :)

Mr Moet for me its run back to 1600m was huge last Saturday now back to a more likeable trip ,Ladysea is an ok animal but i dont think it has the class of Adams 2 horses IMO

are u guys having a laff with all this ladysea waffle...couldn't hold a candle to most of that field.
mr. moet is/was nominated for 2 races..may opt for the mile with 54kg.

Finishes off well..would be more confident if there was some pace in the race, but i'll be happy to have a dig at her....Think Chester Road got run down the other day when it tried to lead all the way...Like her turn of foot at the end of races and have no problem putting a few dollars on her..I'll just check to make sure i nominate the right horse for the right race...

In all honesty guys...a 20 start maiden and a 22 start horse that has had only 1 top 3 finish in it's life..in a Saturday race??? one of these horses is going to earn at least $1000 on Saturday :o :o If there is another scratching they will both earn that as a minimum..

I reckon you could've bought both of them for half that much a week ago..What an embarrassment this race is for Perth Racing on a Saturday.. i now it's not fair on the 2 or 3 horses in this race that are of the correct quality, but these races should be dropped back to mid weeks and if need be put another 12-1600m race on Saturday instead.

PS.. i don't mean to insult the horses, owners or anyone associated with them...But i just don't feel they are Saturday horses and i don't feel this type of field is of any benefit to WA Racing

What price a staying Stallion in WA that can produce anything close to Saturday quality ? With the staying races here being so low quality, a half competant stallion who can inject some endurance into our broodmare ranks will have great success in the years to come.

Now just find someone to buy one to stand, and then find someone to support him with an equal opportunity rather than get smashed as not being a 2YO producer and a quick return on investment as is so often the root cause of staying stallions demise in this Country.

I'd struggle to put my hand in my pocket to buy a Balck Firars as they appear to be better 3 yr olds thatn 2yr olds.. So to get an owner to buy knowing that they have to wait up to 3 yrs for a chance of a regular chq is a big ask. Buy it as yearling break it, educate it and prep it a few times to start as an early - late 3yr old with the hope that it hits it's straps as a 4yr old, would cost about $100k..............then it would have to win 4 city races to break even.....

Wonder how many 5 yr old Helenus's are running around forgotten in paddocks due to not performing early????....It's hard to hold onto them past 3 if they haven't shown anything...It costs a lot and there is little chance of gettign a return.....

So if that is the direction of racing in WA then dont put these races on a Saturday..Put them mid week, increase the prize money if need be, but there is no need to give it national exposure on our weekly main stage...IMO

I read in another thread that Haagen has had a throat operation. Was this since his last run...and shouldnt it be in the gear list or somewhere else?

I've got one now that is rising 4 and just hitting his straps. Had a couple of setbacks that probably cost us 6 months tho.
Costs to date only $40k, but only paid $8k for him as a yearling 8)

Anyone who buys a horse with the intention of racing it at 2 is either a)delusional or b) doesn't have the horses welfare in mind (or both). If they race at 2 it's a bonus.
  • FoolsGoldFoolsGold    148 posts
Agree that if they race at 2 it is a bonus.

One can enhance the chances of having a 2 year old runner through pedigree and buying on type.

There is the school of thought backed up by reputable study that racing horses at 2 can enhance both the longevity and success of a horses career.

The key point in that argument is that the 2 year old needs to be in the hands of the best 2 year old trainers.

In these stables, for a 2year old to actually make it to a trial, let alone a race it must satisfy exhaustive pre requisites to be deemed ready.
  • RIORIO    14,902 posts
I agree totally with what both FG and The Funky one say...but to buy it with the intention or knowledge from breeding for it to not hit its straps until it is a 4yr old is hard too do.

I get yealrings with the intention that they run as 3yr olds, and therefore, as we all know they get prepped, maybe trialled(maybe not) as 2yr olds an see what happens..but i'd want them racing as 3yr olds and certainly have a good idea of their potential as a rising 4yr old. As The Funky one has with the one he stole for $8k...

The figure of $100k was a judgement call on what it'd take to get a yearling to a 4yr old distance horse that was ready to run....and then the whole 4yr period to actually start to perform and do an assesment to either go forward or not with the horse.... So if you stole a horse like TF did, it could be reduced by a few dollars. :) :)

Our last attempt cost us $86k as a rising 4yr old..and that is what i based that $100k figure on...Oh and ours didn't get to trial...So maybe i am looking at the whole subject with a slightly tainted opinion at the moment!!!!

RACE 1 ? OVER THE BORDER HANDICAP 2100m
No. 1 CHESTER ROAD ? Adam Durrant looks to have a mortgage on this staying event with (1) CHESTER ROAD and (3) MR MOET both engaged. I?ll go for (1) CHESTER ROAD on the basis that he should be in front of the stable mate in running and is the one to run down. However, I don?t think there is much between the pair. The obvious third pick is (6) LADYSEA who is a nice mare. She steps up to a trip for the first time this preparation. The next spot is a raffle, but for the sake of my tips, I?ll include (7) TIMBERLANDS.
    Numbers ? 1, 3, 6, 7

RACE 2 ? PERTH ? BEST PLACE ON EARTH HANDICAP 1600m
No. 1 MABEL GRACE ? The Durrant stable will be looking to go BANG-BANG in the first two races as they saddle up the likely short priced favourite in this event, (1) MABEL GRACE. She has been freshened up since her last start victory in the listed York Stakes over a mile and with the claim for Ben Patterson, she looks very well in at the weights. Her biggest problem is her tendency to over-race, but with Late Night Flight in the event, rolling along at an even clip, she will hopefully settle nicely in transit. (3) BROTHER PATRICK has been the star of the show at Kalgoorlie this season, winning three if his four starts in terrific fashion. His only defeat was when he pulled up with cardiac arrhythmia. He looks the main danger. (2) LATE NIGHT FLIGHT finds it hard to win but will lead and give them something to catch. (5) COHORT looks to have solid top four claims for the novelty players.
    Numbers ? 1, 3, 2, 5

    RACE 3 ? G?DAY WA HANDICAP 1000m
No. 12 WAR PRINCE ? I?ll speculate in this juvenile event and go for the first starter trained by Simon Miller, (12) WAR PRINCE. His recent trial effort was good and he doesn?t meet an overly strong line-up for his debut. (10) PARK LANE was solid first up when he finished a close up third after starting the well commissioned favourite. He?ll get a nice run from the draw and looks a good chance. (4) DOMINATING has trialled well and was scratched from a mid-week event and saved for this. (1) SATURDAY SKIES had the run last start and won well. He?ll just need a little luck from his wide gate.
    Numbers ? 12, 10, 4, 1

RACE 4 ? THE GREAT STATE HANDICAP 1000m
No. 6 SCORN SAXON ? This is a terrific three-year-old sprint with a number of promising types engaged. (6) SCORN SAXON looks the horse to beat on the strength of a very impressive first up win where she had her rivals covered a long way from home. From barrier 5 she should be in a position to strike again. (11) THE PARK DANCER showed ability in his first preparation and his recent trial win, when beating Precious Snippets, was first class. I think he is the value runner in the event. (2) STACKS ON flies fresh and excels at the trip. She?ll get a lovely run from the draw and looks a big chance. (5) PASS THE MAGIC is a nice filly who resumes from a spell. She won two of her three starts last preparation and was trapped wide in her only defeat.
    Numbers ? 6, 11, 2, 5

RACE 5 ? CELEBRATE WA DAY HANDICAP 1200m
No. 6 PRECIOUS SNIPPETS ? A good race to kick off the quaddie and I am happy to be aboard the talented mare, (6) PRECIOUS SNIPPETS. She was undefeated last preparation, posting three dominant wins, and she resumes in this event with the benefit of a barrier trial in which she was asked for little. From barrier 5, Glenn Smith should be able to tuck her in just behind the speed and I think she will take a stack of beating. (3) SILVER TRADER has been ticking over nicely this preparation but he always seems to bump into one a little better. He?s an each way chance again. (8) NAVARDA LAD is another with each way claims, he?ll just need some luck from his outside alley. (1) RED MERCEDES has a heavy impost to lug but he?s a consistent galloper who is always in the mix.
    Numbers ? 6, 3, 8, 1

    RACE 6 ? WA DAY PLATE 1200m
No. 2 CAVES ROAD ? This is a really good restricted class sprint. (2) CAVES ROAD is a very talented type who is always hard to beat at this level. He stepped up to listed class at the end of his last preparation and just found the opposition a bit strong. He has a good record at the track and he should be very hard to beat. (1)MONEGHETTI resumes from a spell and he has traditionally flown fresh. He just didn?t fire a shot last campaign and was tipped out after a couple of starts, suggesting that something wasn?t right. His win first up, at his previous preparation, was an absolute ripper and going by his recent barrier trial win, he looks set for another big display. (11) SOLSAY is racing in career best form and with only 51kg he will give them all something to catch. (5) DANTE?S DIAMOND will appreciate the drop back to this company after starting in a listed race when resuming from a spell.
    Numbers ? 2, 1, 11, 5

RACE 7 ? THE SWAN RIVER HANDICAP 1400m
No. 3 PLAYCIDIUM MINT ? As is often the case with these mares? races, this is another wide open event. I thought the first up effort of (3)PLAYCIDIUM MINT was good as she drew wide, settled close to the rear, found traffic problems and finished off solidly when in the clear. From a better draw, I think she can be ridden more aggressively and play a part at each way prices. (5) SAEZURI has not seen any daylight at her last two starts; if she can get to the outside then she?ll be hard to hold out. (10) ONE COOL QUEEN is flying this preparation for her trainers. Her effort last start to come from last and be beaten a head was massive. If she can make use of the draw, she?ll be a major player. (1) MISS VINNOIRE got the money narrowly last start at huge prices. She does have to go up 5kg in weight but drops back to mares? grade.
    Numbers ? 3, 5, 10, 1

RACE 8 ? BEST IN THE WEST HANDICAP 1300m
No. 1 TRUSTEE BROWN ? This is a really good finish to the day and it should be each way odds the field. I?ll go for some value with my top pick and put (1) TRUSTEE BROWN on top. He resumed up the straight at Pinjarra where he lumped an incredible weight of 65kg and was basically there for the hit out only. The step up to 1300m will suit, as will the ?drop? to 58.5kg. He was flying this time last year and if he finds anything near that form, he represents a good each way gamble. (10) TEXAN is going super for Adam Durrant and although he was beaten last week, his effort was still very good as he dropped back to 1000m and was wide for the duration. From barrier 3, he?ll be in the firing line throughout and looks thrown in with 52.5kg in his back. (12) METALMAN should be ready to fire at his third run back from a spell. He found traffic problems at his most recent outing. (5) PIN ROUGE is the likely leader in the race and if he rolls at an even clip, he?ll take some catching.
    Numbers ? 1, 10, 12, 5
