    They have The Everest and The Golden Eagle and the provincial horses have the Tab Highway such strong powerful names yet our version of their race gets named The Quokka 8-| cringe

    The trot race The Nullarbor has a good ring to it and the greyhound version The Sandgroper is iconic to WA and bearable

    Should have been a slot race but based on the Kosiosko model where any joe blow can buy tickets….. it misses the mark imho and lacks innovation

    Just a very poor mans everest if u ask me, better than nothing i suppose

    Well into the footy season, you wouldn't want a Derby or Collingwood etc playing on the day.

    Given Perth is the most isolated capital in the world maybe The Oasis would have been better. The Quokka is a shocker.

    14 runners by $200,000 each $2.8 million, balance of $1.2million. Am i missing something?

    Nearly half the posts here bagging it . Well done to the people behind the scenes involved in putting this together. A lot of posters on here pot WA racing when they do something positive they still get potted. I will go the other way and regardless of its name i am sure i will be on course to watch it..4 million dollar race should attract a quality field

    • Prize money
    • 1st = A$2,000,000;
    • 2nd = A$600,000;
    • 3rd = A$400,000;
    • 4th = A$200,000;
    • 5th = A$140,000;
    • 6th = A$100,000; and
    • 7th to 14th = A$60,000
    You need to run at least 4th of 14 to get your money back. Not including travel expenses. If they get the horses that I presume they hope for i.e. Nature Strip, Eduardo, Lost and Running, etc. It potentially means no local horses/investors will actually make money from the race.
    I'm certainly not suggesting a local horse can't win the race but if all the big names from say The Everest turn up - good luck.
    :-?

    Considering you would be most likely be going 50/50 with the connections of the horse you really need to Finnish 3rd to break even as a slot holder.

    So really the purchasing of a slot is more of an advertising tool rather than an investment you would think.  14 is a lot to sell at $200k that being the case but you would hope they’ve already looked into it and have interested parties.  Would they let the corporates buy a slot I wonder as they wouldn’t blink at that figure.  Would it be too much for the larger local trainers and breeders to buy a slot I wonder?

    I wonder how this will affect the Winterbottom, positive or negative?

    With a lot of these pop up races these no real context as to where they fit in a horses program. Being in April, I'd assume the hope is that the participating horses stay on for the Roma Cup etc for a Winter campaign. Better yet, stay on for a Winterbottom campaign.

    First name that comes to mind with this race. ELITE STREET. They would be locking their chops.

    Not being negative, this probably is targeting the second tier sprinters and the ones that might be getting to the back end of their careers? Ones that are running 4th/midfield in the ES group 1s ?

    Good luck to everyone involved with a new innovation, to inject some much needed exposure and attraction to the racing here.

    This was a typo, not a sudden shift to a NZer accent

    I must have missed it, but how many years do I get for my $200,000 ? Just one slot for one year or multiple years ?

    Can I sell my slot for a profit ?
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
    A) It appears one slot for one year with first right of refusal in subsequent years

    B) No probably not

    Not that it matters to our Thoroughbred comrades but the date for the Harness equivalent, the Nullabor", clashes directly (to the day...April 14th) with the million dollar  NZ Harness slot race at Cambridge. Chances of any NZ representation coming over to Perth to race around an 800m soupbowl with the chance of drawing gate 9 on the front line might not be all that great.

    Is there demand for it from participants?

    Peter’s investment will end up buying a few slots I’d reckon with a few horses on there way home

    Well done to those doing something to change the status quo locally.  A great way to attract some attention and get things happening.  Personally, I would prefer to see a race like this over 1400 for something different

    Why would he buy one? People will be jumping over themselves to get one of his horses into a slot….. and he will negotiate a better split than 50/50 i can tell you that.

    He would buy one to help the race be a success, and he wont have to share the prizemoney.

    I thought spending dollars on the whole racing fraternity would have been more appropriate than just lining the pockets of the privileged few .

    Thats an easy comment but it’s also a very short sited one.  Only way to grow overall is to attract new customers, be that new racing enthusiasts in WA or more likely existing racing enthusiasts from other states.  A big $4million race with some eastern states stars can do that, think jockeys and trainers as much as horses.

    It’s $1.2 being put in really, so all the negative nelly’s, explain how you distribute that money among the whole racing fraternity and a) make any meaningful difference to anything and b) help grow the customer base.

    Tend to agree it's in effect a tick over 20K per week.

    Name of the race is err underwhelming imo too.
