I may have asked this before but was having a discussion with some mates last night and the topic was raised.

What do you think is a decent size bet these days for a local punter?

Who is accepting the larger bets these days?

Which bookmaker or agency would be the biggest now in Australia?

Comments

  • Im sure Tom Waterhouse will let you on for as much as you like.

As for what what is a decent size bet these day for a punter, that question is impossible to answer, for a pensioner that could find anything over a few hundred dollars a decent bet, then you have the stable bets that trainers and connections can place at once when the market first opens up before that saturday meeting they could be in the thousands and then you have the professional punters who bet in 10's of thousands....
    too hard a question IMO
  • I would call over $1000 a big bet however there are some punters are regular at that level or higher

Peter Bartlett is the one bookie in WA who will take on 5 figure sums

the WATAB used to accept big bets but not anymore since PLAYER - TABsportsbet easily the leader in online now
  • Tom Waterhouse if you bet in Syd and Melb yes

He has been a market leader in many respects

first bookie to offer BEST of the BEST (tote or top fluct)

Now also offers TOP FLUCT until jump time instaed of 30mins before like others

It certainly is a much more competetive market place now.

Was getting my tyres done on Wed so popped into a tab to watch a few. A gent was trying to put a $1000 bet on with Player on the cricket. Wadda joke. He was getting frustrated, the TAB agent was doing her best to get him set but by marking out multiple tickets and putting in varying amounts. Feel for the TAB agent in these situations as sure they cop a bit of flack.
  • I dont think RWWA realise's how bad the betting situation is

when multi's first came out there used to be literally 100's of guys coming in taking these up to 10 legs - now (with PLAYER) everyone has given up because its almost 99% chance the bet will get rejected biggest of too big a payout or some rule where u cant multi with certain bets

I know this because I used to work there

Occassionally run into regulars who said they gave up with TAB betting and have gone online because of poor service

but dont worry folks - we can bet on swedish trots and handball now :P

    Handball???????

They need to get their hand off it and sort out the problems.

Australia is $401 for the World Championships

lets put $5 on it and see how much they come in :P

    $5.. That's a plunge.

    They'll probably only take $3.98
  • i bet they let you on for the whole $5, just went to back them for $200 and they gave me the option if i was sure i wanted to place the bet!
they were up for $8000 liability had i of got the bet on....
maybe australia arent even in the tournament...
now that would not surprise me, PLAYER having a team listed that is not even competing :P
  • U MEAN $80,000

Australia are $1000 on Betfair so got no chance Im thinking

Our opening match against Denmark Australia are $100 and Denmark are unbackable - can only lay them at $1.01

I know a bloke who only bets on WA gallops and makes over 100k per year and rarely has more than $500 on one

GREAT ANSWER HASH and a great topic for all of crazy punters. During my uni years I took all the money I had in the world to the races every time I went. Now I bet 20 or 50 times more actual money but these bets are smaller in the scheme of things. So many bookies now just wanna be mini TABS and dont really wanna bet - not blaming them as I dont wanna be a bookie but I do lament the passing of a golden betting era.

Rodent was wondering how much you were making.

A few bookies have come out of their shells this summer for a change. Peter Bartlett has always had balls with his prices over the years. From what I've seen, the two biggest punters in Perth on course prodominately bet around $3k a race. Their initials are E.W & K.L for people whom may know them.

I presume one is the former bookie and doesn't he place bets for a trainer or two.

Spot on Slip...more a commission agent.
The other bloke is independent and a bloody good judge...loves one at odds...

I've seen K.L clean up a bookie or two. Him and E.W have had some big big days.

There is a group of WA based punters betting at the moment in absolutely massive figures.

Talking, anywhere between 10k and 50k.

One for example was 10k on Grand Jardin at $10 in it's most recent victory.

Do you mean the former top jock from years past and a former bookie as well as trainer and others in the flock?

Doesn't matter if they do as he ain't professional just a recreational. Lucky for him he doesn't run a horseracing website and post tips as this could make his winnings taxable. Someone suggested he should be a jockey manager but I reckon if he was that his winnings on the punt would be taxable also. Training horses for a living makes winnings taxable too. I reckon as long as he just punts as he has all his life, he'll be right. Let's face it, you don't get taxed just because you win.
There are several court cases available on the net ATO v punters that make for interesting reading.
I think the learned judges have it spot on!
  • If punting is his primary and seemingly only form of income I reckon the ATO might have a case

Della, It would all depend wether he/she had a taxable income from another source.
If thats the case, the punting would be recreational...I think!!

well thats what I said Mr Falcon but thanks for repeating it

not many recreational punters consistently win $100k a year - RODENT may be among them tho

He has consistantly stated over the years that he has supported his family and has a property in Sydneys inner west all from his punting activities. I would therefore say that his income source is not recreational.
