On The Money Beaufine Stakes Day

Matt Rigby | On The Money | Mon 25 July, 2011

A Bad Start to the Day:

Hibernian in the first was crashed from $7.50 to $4.80 on track and set the tone for a tough day at the track for bookies. The worst was yet to come!

Where Theres Smoke:

Manahara has shown absolutely nothing this campaign but the specking from $17 to $10 indicated that he might be ready to show something for the first time. He ran a creditable third after getting well back and will be one to follow next time out.

As Cold As Ice:

Saytorio has had no luck at all this campaign and his bad luck was set to continue with the step up to 1400m a real concern. Punters were wary also, he drifted from $3.20 to $4.40 with very few takers and raced accordingly.

The Shortie:

Like an Eagle was dropping back in grade and distance, but none of that worried the punters as he was smashed from $2.80 to even money in one of the biggest "goes" of the day. It was an outstanding ride by Pike, getting the cushy run on the fence and finding all the runs to record and easy win, and a lot more pain for the bookies.

Respite:

All Friared Up was backed from $7.50 into $5 in early markets but race day told a different story. Stan Bates Blackfriars filly drifted heavily from $5 to $8 and was almost unlayable. Turns out the early money was correct and she won with a hoof in the air. She was the only respite on what was otherwise a terrible day for the books.

The Big Blue:

Tabcorp posted $14 about the eventual favourite for the Beaufine, Kid Choisir. He was crunched into $4.60 just prior to betting opening on Saturday afternoon. When betting opened, he was a $3.20 shot and remained around that quote througout. Luckily for them, they failed to pay the price, Kid Choisir finishing a well beaten runner up behind All Friared Up.

A Day for the Punters:

Starting prices for winners on the weekend were Hibernian $4.80, Pattie Me Lass $2.70, Moonbound $3.10, Like an Eagle $2, Kerrific $3.50, Miss Tipsy Topsy $4, Answers Are $4.60 and the only joy was All Friared Up at $8. A disastrous day for the bagmen who will be looking for a comeback next week.

Isnt the point based NR system with its barrier draw conditions a handicapping system? I mean highest rated horses drawing worse off seems like a handicap

All horses are scanned at the track.  Before they are even saddled up.
