Lemos in hot water after Broome Cup meeting news

Lemos in hot water after Broome Cup meeting

| Mon 15 August, 2011

story by Robert Edwards from The West Australian.

Leading country jockey Grant Lemos has been charged and faces a stewards inquiry after a day of high drama at Saturday's Broome Cup meeting.

Lemos, 31, is due to appear in court after police arrested him at Broome Airport, where he allegedly made threats against racecourse investigator Phil O'Reilly when checking in on a flight to Perth.

It was a total behaviour change to the person I know, O'Reilly said.

The widely-travelled jockey launched a tirade of abuse at stewards and O'Reilly after he was questioned following a urine sample he provided during a routine swabbing of apprentices and jockeys for alcohol and drugs in the jockeys room before the first race.

Lemos continued his tirade into the stewards room and public arena where he was alleged to have made further threats against officials.

Police escorted Lemos off the track and stewards stood him down from his seven rides, including his mount on Port Hedland Cup winner Pentire Point in the $80,000 Broome Cup (2200m). Robert Markou rode Pentire Point for a third to Viscount Cameron in the Cup.

Stewards were forced to forgo their swabbing of other jockeys because of the Lemos fracas.

Chief racing steward Brad Lewis said the furore occurred when Lemos was questioned about the urine sample he produced.

The experienced rider has had his licence suspended until a stewards inquiry is concluded. A date has yet to be set for the hearing.

He was very loud and abusive and we had to call police to escort him from the course to the stabling area, Lewis said.

Lemos and O'Reilly then crossed paths again that night at the airport while waiting for a plane back to Perth.

Police allege the jockey again became aggressive towards the drug tester and police were called to the airport.

The spokeswoman said the jockey was being led away by police when he fled through the carpark.

He was later caught by police after they chased him and charged with disorderly behaviour in public, escape from lawful custody and possessing a prohibited drug.

He has been bailed to appear in Broome Magistrate's Court on September 12.

Isnt the point based NR system with its barrier draw conditions a handicapping system? I mean highest rated horses drawing worse off seems like a handicap
