A name that is steeped in tradition news

A name that is steeped in tradition

| Thu 29 September, 2011

Gannon is a name that is known well to the WA Racing faternity.

Val and Peter Gannon run the popular "Gannons" store, located at Ascot and Belmont Park on racedays. They have supplied racing silks, memorabilia, trophies and sponsorships to the WA racing industry for decades.

David Gannon, the son of Val and Peter, now seeks to repay the industry that has been so good to his family for generations. His grandfather was a trainer, his father a jockey and bloodstock agent, and now his son Christopher has joined the family business.

David is seeking election to the Perth Racing Committee and wishes to return the favour to an industry that has been so good to his family.

Of most concern to David is the sustainability and longevity of the industry. He would like for his children and indeed their children to be able to continue the family tradition, and make a living from our great game.

"We need to get people back to the races".

With the number of different entertainment options available to the modern day person, we need something to attract those people to our racetracks added David.

With Irish Day just gone at Belmont Park, its quite clear that the races has something to offer, a great form of entertainment.

"Perth Racing's member numbers have stagnated for far too long", commented David.

Perth Raing's membership group has been steady at around 2,500 for many years. This is a key issue that David sees needs addressing.

"More members means more revenue for the club, leading to better facilities and a better experience overall for race goers".

David also believes that in attracting new members, it is of utmost importance to attract the young folk. Young people are sociable, and they will attract others and bring new ideas.

Finally, all of this leads to the improvement of the facilities at Belmont Park. A strong and financial club, with a strong and growing membership base, can afford to upgrade and maintain top class facilities.

The WA racing public have put up with sub standard facilities at Belmont Park for long enough. You only have to take a visit to the facilites at Flemington, Caulfield or Moonee Valley to see we are well off the pace of the top racing clubs in Australia.

David's family has been committed to racing for generations and he feels it is time for him to make a difference by nominating for the Committee.

Please make your vote count in this year's election.

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
