Bringing sound business sense to the Committee news

Bringing sound business sense to the Committee

| Fri 30 September, 2011

Garry Wright is not only a racing man, racing horses in New Zealand, Victoria and WA, but a successful businessman in his own right.

Having founded and run his own company Commercial Design Interiors for the past 21 years, Garry knows his way around "the hard times", and has built a reputation for business excellence and his company is now recognized as the leading commercial fit-out company in WA.

You may have seen Garry around the race tracks of WA. He has been a Perth Racing member for 20 years, and is also a member of WAROA, the Broome Turf Club and Victoria Racing Club.

Most recently Garry experienced success with his outstanding galloper Kincaple, winning the Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie Cups, missing the Bucks Off Liquor bonus by a nose when Reverend Lovejoy held off his late charge in the Boulder Cup.

Racing hasn't been all beer and skittles however for Garry and his new wife Kelda, who also loves her racing. There have been slow horses and tough times, just like most who love the game have experienced.

After watching and enjoying as an outsider for 20 years, and seeing the tough times that the industry is currently experiencing, Garry has decided to step up an offer some of the secrets he has learned in forging his own business, and making it survive and strive post "Global Financial Crisis".

"I believe that corporate sponsorship needs to be embraced so that Perth Racing can increase community involvement and spend money on improving facilities, which will in turn attract more people to the races. We need to make the races a more fun place to attend".

Of great concern are how to turn around the club's operating losses over recent years. Strong financial management and business acumen are required in the coming years to make sure our club survives in the long term.

Garry is no different to any of us; he still loves to see a champion run....Black Caviar, Makybe Diva, Northerly.

He feels it is time for him however to step out of the background and make a contribution to the well being of our sport.

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
