McCabe answers call for Werd
story by Jay Rooney
Talented Victorian apprentice Adam McCabe has answered an SOS to ride quality sprinter Werd at Belmont Park on Saturday.
With several claiming apprentices riding at the Toodyay Cup meeting and Michael Grantham in Sydney, trainer Chris Gangemi turned to McCabe for weight relief for Werd in the Look For The Tick Guaranteed Pools Handicap (1000m).
McCabe, who has bounced back from a small crack to his coccyx suffered in a fall at Pakenham last month, had a breakout year when he finished second to Jake Noonan in the Victorian apprentice premiership last season.
The 21-year-old has ridden six winners this season, including three in the city, to sit third in the premiership race behind Katelyn Mallyon.
McCabe has also picked up the plum ride on Ringmeister in the Burswood Opening Day @ Ascot Next Saturday Handicap (1600m) and Sentenza in the playeronline.com.au Handicap (1400m).
He said he was keen for a successful first trip to WA and open to the possibility of another trip west during the Melbourne spring carnival.
"Melbourne's a bit busy at the moment and it's hard to get rides with three Group 1s at Caulfield," he said. "I've never been over to WA so it will be a good experience."
Werd returns from a six-week break between runs after a comprehensive all-the-way win by four lengths in an open 1000m sprint at Belmont. He carries 57.5kg after McCabe's 2kg claim and faces the likes of For Your Eyes Only, Ma Ma Machine and Morant.
Ringmeister makes his first appearance since his 10th in the Hannan's Handicap (1400m) last month when his saddle slipped.

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
