Northerly Stakes Preview

Matt Rigby | Fri 14 October, 2011

This is a good listed race with some of our top old performers, mixed with some up and comer's, the likes of Waratah's Secret and Ranger.

The only downside here is there isn't too much pace. Waratah's Secret should get the front without too many issues. He settled well for Whiting last start and while he was beaten by Shock Value, I believe he was just outsprinted at the 1200m. He still looked very strong on the line and the 1400m should be to his liking in this.

Nothing much else can go forward outside of Mega Steel and Big Ted. I think Mega Steel's best chance in this company is up on the pace, so he may end up in the breeze. Megatic will box seat and is always a chance in these races, although he is getting a little long in the tooth now. Tarzi doesn't have the best fresh record, but the price is well over the top now at $31 in some places. He has a knack of popping up when at double figures. His trial was pretty good and in fast time.

Speccio and Gondorff are making up numbers. Xaaravid is probably just out of his class, but the distance suits and his last run was good. Big Ted was extremely disappointing and fading badly on the line last start against Philby. He's better than that and can improve.

Put a line through the run of West River Charley first up, he was three and four wide throughout and never given a hope. Ikenushi will ride him much better here and while he is probalby a touch out of his depth, I'd be throwing him into the novelties at 100/1.

I think Waratah's Secret can lead and be hard to beat here. The obvious danger is Ranger, who returned in outstanding style last week. He has a few tricks however. In most of his runs, he has lay in at crucial times and in a couple of his runs, has switched off when hitting the front. This makes him a tough ride for Pike. Timing is crucial, and the ability to keep him going while he lays in.

Waratah's Secret from Ranger and Megatic. (Don't leave Tarzi $26 or West River Charley $101 out of novelties).

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
