Black Caviar to bypass Winterbottom
Premier Melbourne trainer Peter Moody has scrapped plans to take champion sprinter Black Caviar to Perth for Saturday week's Group I Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot.
Black Caviar strode to her 16th consecutive win in Saturday's Group I Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington but Moody told the Herald-Sun the five-year-old "felt the run".
"After talking to the owners, we weighed up the pros and cons and we've decided she won't be going to Perth," Moody said.
"She's just come to the end of it. It was a hot day, firm track and so we decided she can have a break."
Moody said Black Caviar's regular rider Luke Nolen reported the daughter of Bel Esprit did not fire on all cylinders despite flogging her opposition in the outstanding time of 1.08.32 for the 1200-metre trip.
The trainer stressed he was not critical of the Flemington track but the conditions conspired against Black Caviar's recovery from the race.
"Luke just said ‘it was great, but she wasn't at her top'," Moody said.
"I just think she pulled up feeling the ground a bit and that's not a criticism of the track. I don't want people hanging the trackman.
"She's just going to have a break now."
Black Caviar will resume in late January before Moody steps the superstar up to 1400 metres for the first time in her career in the Group I Futurity Stakes and CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield in February.

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
