Tips for Peters Stakes Day - 12th November

Matt Rigby | Metropolitan Racing | Fri 11 November, 2011

Race 1:

A little hard to assess the two year olds with only two of them having started. Simon Miller rarely backs them up, so that lead with Spice Again may be significant. Avuncular trialed well, as has Tempestuous Strike although Spice Again went nearly a second quicker in her trial on the same day. Princess Caraboo and Rimington also with claims. Spice Again, Avuncular adn Princess Caraboo.

No Bet.

Race 2:

Night War won the Karrakatta at her last start and hasnt been seen since March but did trial well in fast time to prove she's somewhere near her best. The form around the best two year olds in the state should be good enough to win this. Gracetown is the obvious danger although the Full Clip, You Say So, Watermans Bay formlines dont stack up nearly as good as Night War. Little Larrikin got his own way in front in the midweekers and just held out Easi Cummins, so its hard to see him figuring here. Queen of Quincy ran a good race at Northam before failing in the city and spelling. She must be an outside chance to upset and Its a Merc a place chance at the big odds ($41). Night War should win form Gracetown and Queen of Quincy.

Suggested Bet: Night War at odds against.

Race 3:

The more you look at this race, the clearer it seems Precious Snippets will be too good. The only stick in the spokes could be Mavromata getting an easy lead and kicking away from them at the top of the straight. This could well happen with no other pace outside of Ahoy Calypso. Having said that, Precious Snippets has sat outside the leader before and won convincingly, so Pike has that option. Sky Magic has been running good races, but will not appreciate the lack of pace in this. Likewise Avonmore Terrace, who probably goes better at the front end of her campaign. Pearlesque was just a run first up, but can improve here at 1400m. Precious Snippets a good bet here and I think she should be evens at best. Precious Snippets, Mavromata, Ahoy Calypso.

Suggested Bet: Precious Snippets at odds against.

Race 4:

This is a tough race where Cristiano will probably start under the odds again. He has been touted by a number of trainers as having a stack of ability, but rarely do we see it on raceday. Sushi Warrior has returned this campaign in great form and can continue that here. Romp to Fame had a short campaign last time, culminating in a good win over The Regulator, where they cleared out from the rest of the field. They are the three obvious picks. Other chances are Monaco Prince who has put in two enormous runs this campaign, Henry the Pharoah, who can race on the pace here and Grand Approach, who had every chance and fell in at his last start. The pace is questionable, which may favour Cristiano and Henry the Pharoah. Its a tough call, I have brackets around Cristiano, Romp to Fame and Sushi Warrior.

No Bet.

Race 5:

Metal Talk was all the rage first up over 1000m back in October. That day he had every chance and was only winding up late, going down narrowly to Gotham City. Theres plenty of pace again here, which should aid his tendency to over race. Freetime, Centrum, Cobble Lane and dont be surprised if they choose more aggressive tactics on Even Astar. This will suit Metal Talk, but also horses like The Corporation and General Confusion, the latter who has trialed well, but is off a 22 month spell. Ginsberg was a big run, given a shove out wide behind Solsay and not shirking the task last week. He has the ability but can be hard to catch. Metal Talk, Ginsberg and Freetime.

Suggested Bet: Metal Talk at more than $3. Small spec on General Confusion at $26.

Race 6:

See RJ Peters Preview: The only change to this is that Ringmeister is now out. This gives Westriver Kevydon the easy lead. I doubt whether Pike, Whiting and even Turner will allow him to skip away like he did at his last two runs however.

Rafferty, Westriver Kevydon, Tranquility.

Suggested Bet: Rafferty each way at $3.50.

Race 7:

The way these fillies all finished in the Burgess Queen doesnt make this race any easier to assess. The best runs that day were probably Almachino, who was dragged back and wide, and Single Spice, who had to weave through traffic and was held up on the line. Pattie Me Lass was forced to race outside the leader and was probably not suited in that role either. Dark Miss, Red Hot Sax, Pure Heaven and Voices of Spring all had decidedly better runs. Caiguna and Democratism come out of easier races, as does Allez Marseilles. At the huge price, I give the latter a good each way chance. Ill stick with Almachino to beat Single Spice and Dark Miss although they could all finish very close to each other again. Almachino is no value at the moment at $5 so we'll give that a miss and spec on Allez Marseilles at $81.

Suggested Bet: Allez Marseilles, small each way.

Race 8:

The Tenby Friar all but beat one of the Railway Stakes favourites in Luckygray two starts back and will go into this race the short priced favourite. He is no doubt the one to beat here, but the $1.80 in most places now is well under the odds. Gum Nut Guru ran another huge race last week, racing wide, copping a bump and taking ground off Rocky Range to go down by less than a length. The 59kg might just test him here. Goose was slow away and then squeezed towards the back and didnt get much room in the straight back on Cup Day. He may try and lead here and is best in that role. Veracious, likewise, ran his best race for a while leading and I think connections will want him to race forward again. He may lead or breeze in this. Volcanic Causeway has run two excellent races this time in. Leading and setting a 1.22.22 pace for Luckygray, then breezing in 1.21.92 and beaten less than 4 lens to Westriver Kevydon, who is favourite for the Peters. Drawn 1, this gelding is close to his best form and can give The Tenby Friar a real fright here at $31. The Widder has O'Donnell back aboard, the last rider to win on him and also has claims along with Pintada Prince. Tipping The Tenby Friar from Volcanic Causeway and Veracious.

Suggested Bet: Volcanic Causeway each way all day.

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
