Bunbury Preview 03/12

Gary Wright | Country Racing | Fri 3 February, 2012

Another twilight card at Bunbury today with a late finish of 6.24pm, which will hopefully see quite a few locals get along to the races after work commitments, and a healthy turnover off course also. A few tough maiden races with huge fields make it difficult to predict winners with a lot of confidence, however it may be a good day for local jockey Kyra Yuill who has some very good rides in the middle of the program, she may pay to follow this afternoon.

Race 1- Vero Insurance Maiden- 1200metres

A tough maiden race to start proceedings here with a maximum field to contest over the 1200metres, so you should be getting good value if you do choose to invest here. Will go for Angel Wing on an each way basis based on a good second at this track on New Years Day when just bloused out by Split the Faith. Her subsequent run at Pinjarra seems disappointing on face value but she did receive a cut to the leg and some interference so we might be best to forget that run. She is nicely drawn here in the big field so should run a good race. There are plenty of dangers in such an open race, possibly Fonzarelli could run a good race based on his last start third at Northam before being spelled, he did run a nice trial at Belmont last week also, in preparation for his return to the track. Both Richie and Jack the Sparrow come into the race on the back of placings in the same race at their last start behind Kunnunurra at Pinjarra, and both should go well, although Jack the Sparrow will have to overcome a wide draw here, and Lena’s Star has been trialling well for the Damian Miller stable, and may run a forward race at her first start.

Numbers- 13-7-2-3

Suggested Bet- 13- Angel Wing- Each Way

Race 2- Ace Insurance Maiden- 1200metres

Another tough race here with not a lot of exposed form to go with. I will go for a couple of first start horses as my selections here but tread very warily if having an investment in this. Diggers Reward has had two promising trials for trainer Graham Yuill and may run a nice race first up today and start what could be a very good day for boom apprentice Kyra Yuill. This Elvestroem gelding has drawn well in a middle barrier in what will also be a maximum field, and may be at nice each way odds today. Another first starter in Elite Belle may also run well for prominent owner Bob Peters on the strength of some reasonable trial form, she has certainly been well schooled on the trial track in her preparation for racing, and could run quite well today. The horse with the most exposed form is Royal Titan, he has run five places in a eighteen start career, and may do so again if he can overcome a wide draw in the big field. The Grey Don is also drawn wide but has run nice races at his last couple of starts, and possibly Amelia’s Moment may run well for the Luciani stable first up this afternoon.

Numbers- 4-11-1-2

Suggested Bet- No Bet

Race 3- Dolphin Insurance Maiden- 1410metres

Another maximum field to contest here but we may be able to narrow this race down to a few chances and will tip Opera Seria to break through for her maiden win today. This Oratorio filly has been freshened up since running a close second to Gallietto at Pinjarra on Dec 1, and is nicely drawn here so should give you a good sight for your money. The distance seems to be suitable for her return, and Kyra Yuill may boot home another winner in this. The big danger appears to be Regal Honour, another from the strong Bob Peters/Grant Williams owner/trainer combination who was just beaten at his last start at Pinjarra behind Rack’em Up, which was in fact his only race start. Prior to that he had been trialling reasonably well and will also start from a suitable barrier should the emergencies come out of this event. The best of the remainder appear to be Mactora who should be improved at his fifth race start today, and possibly Tilla Chance at what might be nice each way odds.

Numbers- 6-1-2-3

Suggested Bet- 6- Opera Seria- Win

Race 4- Zurich Insurance Maiden- 1690metres

Its never easy to proclaim a winner in a distance maiden race, and its a similar situation here with quite a few chances in another open event. Will go with Ocyofoz to break through at his seventh start today based on his recent good form at this track, with placings at his last two starts down here. Hopefully he can overcome the wide draw, but the draw probably isn’t so imperative at the 1690metre start. Minicano appears to also be in this race up to his ears, having followed a close second to Cygnet Bay here on Dec 28 with a fifth to Kununurra at Pinjarra on Jan 11 when he was wide all the way as the favourite in that event, so it may pay to forget that effort and go on the previous second at this track. One that may improve with the rise in distance today is Longstride for the Luciani stable, he has been running on over shorter distances at his last few starts. Next best may be Scarpered who got a long way back at Esperance last start, but previous to that had been about the place in these sort of races.

Numbers- 3-2-10-11

Suggested Bet- 3-Ocyofoz- Each Way

Race 5- CGU Insurance Handicap- 2019metres

Two horses stand out in this race with exposed form and they are Jazz’N’Shiraz and Shot Of Glory. Its a tough decision to try and separate them but will slightly lean to Jazz’N’Shiraz on the strength of her last start victory on Sunday at Pinjarra. She does rise 3kgs on that win and that is a bit of a worry but if she can overcome that burden can give you a very good sight for your money. She did work up to that Pinjarra win with a couple of nice fourths behind Goose at Ascot not beaten too far in those events. Shot Of Glory appears to be a big player in this race also having run third to Teddys Mate over this distance at Pinjarra on Jan 11, which did follow a win over Grandstand at this track and distance previous to that. Emaho may run a better race back down in class from his last start at Ascot, he appears more suited today in this race, and Cara Carabini mixes his form, but on his day can run some good races in this sort of company over these sort of distances.

Numbers- 2-3-4-1

Suggested Bet- 2- Jazz’N’Shiraz- Win

Race 6- MGIB Handicap- 1410metres

One of the better races of the afternoon here with a couple of promising horses engaged. Mcblitzam did just that at his first race start at Pinjarra on Jan 19 when winning easily over Royal Edict, and looks like he can go on with it here. He has a nice draw in another big field and the services of Shaun O’Donnell and this Mcflirt gelding can keep the hundred per cent record intact today. He did trial well before that first race start and looks to have quite a bit of ability. The main danger should be Just A Noble who has also impressed at his first three race starts, with a win and two placings to boot. His last start on New Years Day here at Bunbury he was only beaten 1.5lengths by the very promising Hey Blondie, and he looks set to run another good race this afternoon. Ragtrader is always about the place, a perennial placegetter and he will pay to include in your novelties here as it appears another suitable race for him to run well in, and Windinthepillows is another who runs some very consistent races but finds it hard to win, he will appreciate the claim for promising young apprentice Renee Forrest here and can also run a nice race, another for your novelties.

Numbers- 4-3-2-1

Suggested Bet- 4- Mcblitzam- Win

Race 7- QBE Insurance Handicap- 1200metres

Diatorio has put the writing on the wall at her last two starts running seconds to Miss Dandy and Felined and appears to be a pretty good bet today allowing for improvement on those efforts. Shaun O’Donnell is the regular rider of this Oratorio mare and is in the saddle today, and he could also cap a pretty good day here by booting her home in this race. Fire Side may run a good race first up today, she has top jock William Pike on board and has won first up in a previous preparation, did trail her for her return to the track on Jan 6, she has a pretty good strike race with three wins from thirteen attempts so could go well in this. Cygnet Bay won well down here on Dec 28 to break his maiden status, then copped some interference at his subsequent start also at Bunbury on Jan 12, and may be in the pacings today, and another with a great first up record Is Celtic Rock, so may pay to keep an eye on him today at what will possibly be juicy each way odds.

Numbers- 9-10-8-12

Suggested Bet- 9- Diatorio- Win

Race 8- Pacific Premuim Funding Handicap- 1690metres

Deportment ran a great race first up for the Lindsey Smith stable at this track on Jan 12 and no reason to think she cant go on with it today, that followed on from some nice form over these type of distances in her previous campaign. She has yet to be placed second up but does appear to be a better racehorse than she might have been in those campaigns, so will tip her to continue her winning ways this afternoon in this last event. Another with claims is Zoetomtaya, who goes very well for Kyra Yuill, she beat Ragtrader here on Dec 22 at nice odds, and subsequently has run behind the placegetters, but back to suitable company today can run a good race. The distance may put a few punters off but when she is in form she does run home very strongly so hopefully will run out a strong 1690metres this afternoon. Another with good Great Southern form is Doctor Ava, having been placed at Mount Barker and Albany at her last couple of outings, and Impulsive Fighter should run a better race in more suitable company today, he has primarily raced on city tracks running some reasonable races at Ascot, and may go a lot closer this afternoon.

Numbers- 3-8-10-9

Suggested Bet- 3- Deportment- Win

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
