GUMBYS GOSSIP- Pinjarra- 22nd March

One of the bigger provincial racing cards this afternoon, featuring the Chaff City Classic which has brought together a really good field as you would expect. Another marathon days racing at Pinjarra, with some very good supporting races , featuring very promising gallopers like Peggies Dream and Rose. Some very big fields engaged which hopefully allows for good betting races. A nice day on the weather front as well should see a big crowd on course for one of the big days on the Pinjarra racing calendar.

Race 1- Ballast Finance Maiden- 1000metres

A small field of two year olds to contest the first race of the day, but still difficult to try and pinpoint a winner here, with five of the eight starters unraced, and none of them having raced down the straight five furlongs at Pinjarra previously. Will go for Thunder Express to open his account today, based purely on the race experience gained in his two starts, a nice second to Wombies Legacy at Bunbury followed by a fifth at Ascot to the promising Sky Princess. Normally the inside barrier at the 1000metres at Pinjarra is looked at as a disadvantage, but with the small field Brad Parnham should be able to get him across to the outside, where nearly all winners come from in these straight races. Nothing Personal has trialled quite well, winning his last trial easily at Belmont on Mar6, is beautifully bred being by the great Lonhro, so will pay to watch him at his first race outing this afternoon. Black Truffle may fill a minor placing, she should be improved by her first up effort at Ascot on Feb29, and Tribal Cat may also be around the place, a new starter for the strong Morton stable who has shown promise in trials also.

Numbers- 1-4-6-8
Suggested Bet- 1- Thunder Express- Win

Race 2- Ballast Financial Management Maiden- 1600metres

A maximum field to contest this race over the mile, so chances are a plenty here. However I will tip California Dude to break through today after some terrific runs of late, most notably a close fourth in the strong South West Breeders stakes at the recent Bunbury carnival. He was beaten under a length that day by horses of the calibre of Comtesse Le Gran and Watermans Bay, so that is really good form for a race such as this one today. He does have a nice draw in the big field, and should race close to the front, so he is the on top selection here. Ready For Sure has also run a couple of promising races at Bunbury lately, and comes into this race with a good chance, also nicely drawn for top hoop Paul Harvey and will certainly be around the place. Barnsley Lad looks to have some ability, he was held up for a run when making his race debut at Ascot on Mar7. Others to come into calculations in an open race would be Galaxy Prince for the strong Grant Williams stable, Black Phaeton who wasn't ridden the best last start at Bunbury, so go on his previous run at that track, and Endorsed who should appreciate the extra distance this afternoon.
Numbers- 1-2-7-9

Suggested Bet- 1- California Dude- Each Way

Race 3- Chaff City Quality Grains Maiden- 1400metres

Another tough race here, once again a maximum field engaged but will go with Ihtsadame as the selection in this, however not with any great confidence. This Bunbury trained mare ran a good second last week behind Adira on her home track, when coming from well back. She was well supported that afternoon, no doubt on the strength of a good second in a trial behind the very promising Peggies Dream the week before. She may drop out once again as seems to be her pattern of racing, and maybe with the big field there will be a good pace on and she may storm home late. She will come in a few barrier positions with the scratchings today, but being a horse that drops out in her races, the wide draw shouldnt impact against her too much. Dangers are aplenty though, with maybe Revisionary the next best, he looked the winner half way down the straight at Bunbury last week before just peaking on his run, and may give you a good sight for your money today in a very open race. Kim Ashlee has been around the place in these sorts of races of late, and will no doubt crack a maiden victory eventually, and you could also include Richie, Simply No Doubt and Flirt Around as chances today. Flirt Around did lead quite easily at her first race start last week and should also be improved by that outing, they are all good novelty chances here.
Numbers- 8-4-11-15

Suggested Bet- 8- Ihtsadame- Each Way

Race 4- Chaff City C.O.D. Discount Maiden- 1200metres

Stormy Prince was well fancied at his last start at Northam back on Oct28 when finishing fourth to Ruby's A Flirt. He has since been spelled and warmed up for a return to racing with a slashing trial victory by 3 ½ lengths last week at Belmont. He does have a nice draw for his assignment today and looks to have good each way claims in another open race. Cat Five will be one to watch for the in form Simon Miller stable. Its probably fair to say he was a little disappointing in his first racing campaign but he does look to have improved since, having also run a good trial in preparation for his racetrack return today, although the poor barrier wont help his cause. Husselhoff should be improved by his recent runs, both at this track and will probably run a competitive race this afternoon at his third run back this campaign, with Thurston Lane another with claims here today.
Numbers- 2-8-9-10

Suggested Bet- 2- Stormy Prince- Each Way

Race 5- Chaff City- Cool Claytons Maiden- 1200metres

A few promising types to contest this maiden race led by Stellular, who should improve on his first up run at Bunbury on Mar4 when a good third to Bear Trader. It is another difficult race with quite a few chances but if forced into a selection then will go with Stellular to salute the judge today. He does have a pretty good draw at the tough 1200metre start which augers in his favour, and regular jockey Troy Turner takes the mount again. One to watch out for in this preparation looks to be the Shane Edwards gelding Wild West Willy, who showed some reasonable form at Northam when last in work, but does look to have improved this time in judged by a huge trial win back on Feb27, certainly watch betting markets to get an indication how this horse will go this afternoon. Fighting the Blues has been consistent of late, and looms as a good show again here, but the wide draw does pose a question mark, and one that might be at good odds is Nirimich, he did go very fast at his first start here two weeks ago before compounding in the straight, but does look to have a fair amount of ability. Sequalo System is another you might want to slot into novelty bets in this race.

Numbers- 13-3-1-5

Suggested Bet- 13- Stellular- Each Way

Race 6- Chaff City Complete Horse Diet- 1000metres

The very promising full sister to the great Miss Andretti in Peggies Dream steps out again this afternoon down the straight 1000metre course. After two ultra impressive trials at her home track down at Bunbury she started a very short priced favourite last Sunday week in her first race start and just got the money in the last stride. However she did begin poorly and race very greenly that day and you would think with the benefit of that race experience she will improve markedly this afternoon. She has drawn a nice outside barrier for this race so can get to the outside fence quite easily and judged by the wraps on this mare, she should win once again. Loretta's Own did win her maiden race at Narrogin last week very impressively and looks to be a good chance to fill a minor placing here today, her form has been ultra consistent this time in. Chok Dee was probably a little disappointing last week at that same Narrogin meeting but has raced down the straight five numerous times and has a pretty good record doing so, will put him down as the third selection today, with the Esperance galloper Cool Zero also some chance, has been in terrific form at his home track, so will be interesting to see how he measures up to provincial class in this race.
Numbers- 10-12-5-2

Suggested Bet- 10- Peggie's Dream- Win

Race 7- Chaff City Choice of Champions Handicap- 1000metres

A terrific race here with the unbeaten Rose the one to beat. She resumed racing after a long absence last week at Bunbury and couldn't have been more impressive after missing the start and storming home to win easily that day. On the promise she has shown at her only three race starts she really could be set for big things on the racetrack if she can stay sound, lets hope she can as she is an exciting proposition. She must be the on top selection here. There are some good horses contesting this race with the 1000metre specialist Cockeyed Bob also engaged, he has been racing extremely well at this course and distance lately, and would normally be the winning selection, but he does run into a good one today. Texan is another who looks to have above average ability, he was very impressive at his first start in this state when he won first up at Ascot on Mar7, and looks like he will be a good money spinner for the connections. Pearlesque always races consistently, she does find it hard to win, but hasn't finished further back than fourth at her last five starts so must be included in novelty bets on this race, and The Puzzler ran a good race last time out behind Texan and does meet that horse 1kg better today, a pointer to a good showing. A really good sprint race this one.

Numbers- 10-3-7-5

Suggested Bet- 10- Rose- Win

Race 8- Chaff City Quality Chaff Handicap- 2000metres

This is one of the better 57-68 distance races we have seen on a country track for a fair while with a few promising gallopers engaged here. Regal Honour looks to have above average ability having been placed in the first two at all four starts in his racing career, and as long as he can handle the step up to the 2000metres so early in his career I think he can win today. Drawn beautifully in barrier two, the services of top hoop and regular rider William Pike all good pointers to a good showing this afternoon. Fair Hunter ran a much better race last time out when only beaten a neck by Go Jorj here on Mar1, and looms as a good hope in this race, he certainly does have a good record at the Pinjarra track. The Social Network ran a good race in the Breeders last week at Bunbury when not beaten too far that afternoon, and can also make her presence felt here if running up to that form. Midnight Touch and Finnegans Gold also come in with claims in what is a very good race.

Numbers- 8-1-10-6

Suggested Bet- 8- Regal Honour- Win

Race 9- Chaff City Pinjarra Classic- 1500metres

The Blue Riband sprint event of the Pinjarra racing season here and brings together a very good field as you would expect for a race with an $80,000 purse. Reimbursement did beat Maschino home by 1 ½ lengths in the Bunbury Stakes last week, but does meet him on 3kgs worse terms this afternoon, having to lump 59kgs over the 1500metre journey today and I believe the weight factor, the extra 100metres of this race and the Pinjarra straight all are pointers to Maschino turning the tables this afternoon. Kyra Yuill will no doubt drop Maschino back to the tail of the field and attempt to flash home down the outside of the track and he must be a very good chance of running over the top of these at the end of the race. Bites The Dust is in terrific form, probably has become a very under rated galloper of late, he also meets Reimbursement on 3kgs better weight terms than in the Bunbury Stakes, after racing wide throughout that race and probably will be the biggest danger to Maschino on her recent efforts. Reimbursement must still be respected, simply on his winning run in the Bunbury Stakes, but the weight differential and the extra 100metres today may just prove too much to overcome. Brave Knight ran a terrific race first up at Ascot, and this evergreen galloper seems to have come back as well as ever for new trainer Grant Williams, one for the novelties in a really good race.
Numbers- 7-3-1-4

Suggested Bet- 7- Maschino- Win

Race 10- www.chaffcity.com Handicap- 1500metres

Greymates has been ultra impressive at his two race starts in this state, winning well at Bunbury first up before a good second to promising galloper Strawberry Beau at this track a fortnight ago and looks the way to get out on todays big card. He has drawn well for regular jockey Troy Turner and should be able to continue on with his good form this afternoon. He was an Eagle Farm placegetter before coming to the West, and has only been unplaced once in his career so far, all pointers to a very good showing in this final event. The topweight Windinthepillows appears to be the main danger here, his last start second to Shezapro at this track was full of merit, and Shezapro has since gone on to frank that form with a last start placing at Ascot in a listed race, so Windinthepillows is worth considerable thought today. Kilat has run some nice races at Ascot lately and comes into this race with a good each way chance, as does Fair Fight, a winner at Bunbury back in February, and one for a maddie might be No Expectations, a much improved effort last start here two weeks ago.
Numbers- 2-1-4-5

Suggested Bet 2- Greymates- Win

Best Bet- Race 6 No 10 Peggies Dream
Race 7 No 10 Rose

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
