GUMBYS GOSSIP- Bunbury- 28th March

Back to Bunbury this afternoon for nine races, with some up and coming horses engaged, most of who showed some promising form in the minor races during the recent Bunbury carnival. The Provincial championship series heat has bought together a good field, whilst the special conditions three year old race boasts a promsing type in Accelarometer, who impressed at his first race start, be interesting to see if he can follow that up this afternoon.

Race 1- A Healthier WA Maiden- 1100metres

A tough race to start proceedings today, with not a lot of race form exposed as we tend to find in these sort of two year old races. A couple that have got some form on the board are Ain't No Kitty and Quick Draw and will go for those two to fight out the finish of the race today. Ain't No Kitty has been spelled since having a couple of runs in the spring, the most notable of those was a third at Ascot to Tempestuous Strike on Nov 12, she did also run in a race won by the promising Luke's Luck a couple of weeks later also at Ascot, so her form has been in stronger company. She warmed up for a racetrack return with a Belmont trial win two weeks ago, and has drawn perfectly in barrier three for William Pike this afternoon. Quick draw has been improving with every run in her first campaign having run third at her last two starts here at the Bunbury track at her last two starts, is also pretty favourably drawn on the inside today in a big field, so must be considered a good winning chance. If Grand Palace gets a start he must be respected on a good sixth to Lukes Luck in that same Ascot race on Nov26, and then we try and dissect a little of the trial form, with Virtual Trader one to watch on his win at Belmont on Mar 19, to be ridden by Paul Harvey this afternoon, and maybe Hell Of A Fella up from the Steve Wolfe stables in Albany the best of the others in this.
Numbers- 9-10-13-7

Suggested Bet- 9- Ain't No Kitty- Each Way

Race 2- Smokefree's A Winner Maiden- 1675metres

A big maiden field here over the middle distance but a couple of very good chances in Ihts Riveting and Friars Spirit who both come out of the same race at Bunbury back on Cup day when they ran second and third respectively to Mon Biscuit. Ihts Riveting ran second that day and will go for him to break his maiden status today. He has the good combination of William Pike and a good barrier this afternoon and does look a promising type. Kyra Yuill may have to play bridesmaid again to Pike here on Friars Spirit, although she has shown a good deal of promise at her three race starts, and looked to appreciate the extra distance at her last start in the Mon Buscuit race, not a lot between these two horses in this race today. Scarpered has been running some good races of late, but just finding it a little difficult to break through for a victory, but certainly looks a good novelty chance here, and Bar Lover may be about the place as well, slightly disappointing last start behind Adira, but go on a good first up effort here at Bunbury on Mar 4 at his race debut.
Numbers- 2-11-9-3

Suggested Bet- 2- Iht's Riveting- Win

Race 3- Back A Winner Smokefree Maiden- 1200metres

A maximum field of sixteen starters in this race, and the early battle between Pike and Yuill may continue here. Once again Ive got the Pike mount just in front in Heaven Tonight from the Lindsey Smith stable. This nicely bred Oratorio filly ran a slashing second at Belmont first up last August, and then started favourite when finishing seventh at Ascot at her only other race start on Oct 26. She does appear to have plenty of ability and has a beautiful draw in barrier five in this big field today. The danger may be Everest Bay who ran a terrific race when leading last start here on Stakes Day, that was a much improved effort on her first two runs and she will probably try to get across from barrier eleven pretty quickly this afternoon and race forward once again. Be Ar Devil has shown promise at his seven race starts and looms as a danger in this event also, nicely drawn in barrier six for Jeff Noske, with Venetian Queen, who is becoming quite costly for punters possibly the next best here. One from trials who looks to have ability is Ghost Trader, may pay to keep a watch on his first race start this afternoon.
Numbers- 12-13-2-8

Suggested Bet- 12- Heaven Tonight- Win

Race 4- Butt Out and Be Smokefree Maiden- 1200metres

The last of the maiden races this afternoon, once again difficult to tip anything with a great deal of confidence in this. I did tip Stellular last week and she did come home strongly to finish third to the runaway winner Wild West Willy. She has regular rider Troy Turner engaged once again today and should go well. The wide barrier is a concern though, drawn in twelve over the 1200metres so I wouldn't be having a large wager on her, but do have her as the on top selection in this. Sheezthebusiness ran a terrific race on Cup day behind Cyclonic Halo and seems to be improving with every run, nicely drawn in this race, and looms as a very good chance. Bohemian Paradise has been producing very consistent form of late, as has No Time to Flirt, both must be considered novelty chances in this race. Another watch on a trial performer here in Charge It To Me, a first up winner in trials for Robyn Lockwood, looks to have some ability and is drawn quite nicely for jockey Steven Parnham at its race debut.
Numbers- 13-11-1-10

Suggested Bet- 13- Stellular- Each Way

Race 5- Racing Towards Smokefree Handicap- 1200metres

A couple of real promising gallopers go around here, and the best of them looks to be True Gold for the strong Grant Williams stable. This Startac gelding returns to the track today for his third start in a race, the previous two being a win at Bunbury and a second at Ascot during the spring. Ben Paterson has been engaged this afternoon to bring the weight down to only 56.5kgs and he does look to be the testing material here on the promise he showed last campaign. Mr Magic also raced well in his last campaign breaking through at his first race start at Northam, and then being placed at Ascot behind Full Clip, certainly recommendations for this race today. Another with prospects is That Means Horse, placed at his last two starts at Bunbury and Ascot respectively for trainer David Harrison, and also Smart As A Fox, his form is good behind both Classic Emblem and Ave The Snip, he will appreciate the drop in class this afternoon.

Numbers- 1-3-4-2
Suggested Bet- 1- True Gold- Win

Race 6- Smokefree Your Best Bet Handicap- 1200metres

Accelarometer was a most impressive runner up here on Bunbury Cup day and can go one better this afternoon. He did get a mention in the stewards report for being held up for a run in the straight, plus racing very greenly that afternoon, which made the run more meritorious. He has drawn beautifully in barrier seven, has regular rider Jason Whiting on board and really does look to be hard to beat in this event. El Costa Mar ran an improved race last start at Ascot behind Pure Adrenalin, is also drawn well and may prove to be the hardest to beat here. Jason Whiting has hopped off to ride Accelarometer though which might give punters some guide in this race. Fighters Second did win his last start down at Narrogin very easily, is up in class on that run but must be given some chance today, and Pininci has been racing quite consistently in his first racing campaign, and must be respected as well. This is a very good three year old race here, with some good up and coming types engaged.

Numbers- 4-8-1-2

Suggested Bet- 4- Accelarometer- Win

Race 7- Smokefree WA Handicap- 1400metres

Kyra Yuill has a good book of rides this afternoon and she hops back on board Tellem Ya Dreamin in this race, and must have good prospects of booting home a winner with this Pins gelding. His last two starts he has burst to the front building up a good lead, winning at Bunbury on Mar4 with Yuill on board that day, and being run over by the very promising galloper Platinum Rocker at his last start here on Mar15, probably fair to say the jockey went a bit early on him that day. There are no Platinum Rockers in this field, so he looks a very good winning prospect this afternoon. The other top chance in this field is Louisiana Lady, she has been up for a fair while but continues to race in ever consistent form, boasting a win at Pinjarra back on Feb19, followed by a close fourth here to Viking Lad on Mar4, the thing that might split these two horses is the horror barrier draw Louisiana Lady has to contend with today, she will probably have to drop back and be ridden for luck where as Tellem Ya Dreamin will probably race in front and control the tempo of the race from there. Lone Princess ran a good race at Pinjarra last start and comes in nicely here with a light weight, and at what will be good each way odds It'sastar may run on late this afternoon, a roughie for novelty punters.

Numbers- 7-4-15-13

Suggested Bet- 7- Tellem Ya Dreamin- Win

Race 8- Skyracing TV Provincial Championship Series Heat- 1400metres

This is a very good race with some excellent form exposed. Hey Blondie has been racing in very good form, in fact she has been placed nine out of ten lifetime starts so holds her form very well. Last start it took a very promising horse in Be So Ryski to beat her, she wont be the only horse to lower her colours to that impressive galloper. She should bounce back to winning form this afternoon in this event. Drawn nicely in barrier two and regular hoop Troy Turner on board again she can be a good bet here. The obvious danger is Born To Be Bad, coming off an impressive winning effort here at Bunbury on Mar11, his form has also been of a high standard lately and he will also be hard to beat this afternoon, both of these horses are certainties to put into any quadrellas this afternoon. Dangerously was slightly disappointing first up when starting favourite but will still pay to follow, he may get back but will no doubt be running on at the end of this race, and maybe the Albany trained I'm Called Earl is a sneaky place chance as well in whats another good country field.

Numbers- 5-1-12-7

Suggested Bet- 5- Hey Blondie- Win

Race 9- Craig Noble Memorial Handicap - 2000metres

Quite a good distance race to finish the programme this afternoon, with a lot of these horses having shown good form over the past month or so. Will go with First Flight in a very open race to possibly notch his second race victory here today, but only on an each way basis, I would expect a pretty wide open betting race here. First Flight is on trial at the 2000metres this afternoon but providing he runs it out strongly can be one of the main chances on his previous form, including a win and a second at this track in recent starts. His last start at Ascot was a sixth to Silver Plated only beaten 3 lengths that day in town, so does look suited back to provincial class today. Mon Buscuit finally broke through at his nineteenth race start down here on Mar15, that followed on some good consistent form beforehand, and he just might go on with it now. Similarly Crispiano went to Narrogin last start and bolted in, he will need luck from barrier sixteen, may have to be snagged back before the first turn here but he has shown ability, franked by that big win last start and must be included in novelties. Endless Sacrifice is another performing consistently in these types of races and warrants respect today as well, a good race to finish the day at Bunbury.
Numbers- 3-4-1-10

Suggested Bet- 3- First Flight- Each Way

Best Bet- Race 5 No 1 True Gold
Race 7 No 7 Tellem Ya Dreamin
Race 8 No 5 Hey Blondie

My thoughts...Logistically, a trainer getting to the races for a 9am start would be extremely difficult to achieve on a routine basis when travel time & having to be clocked in on course 1 hour before their race at 9am, is taken into consideration. Not to ...

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
