Ascot Review - 6th April
Ascot R1. Connector Drilling Sprint
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
1000m | 11:50AM
With the late scratching of Pure Glamour, Baleen In Me ridden by B. Parnham was all the rage at $2.70.
Race 1 was run at a hectic pace in the early stages. Wahkeena, Hazy Heart and Oraletto all jumped well and showed the early pace, but it was Baleen In Me who had the best spot right behind the leaders. As they went around the bend, Oraletto went around the leaders, but it was Baleen In Me who swept past Oraletto and went on to win its third victory in a row from a fast finishing Il Vincero.
Results
1. 5 BALEEN IN ME $2.70/$1.20
2. 8 IL VINCERO $2.40
3. 1 WAHKEENA $1.40
Horse to follow:
Baleen In Me – This three year old has a lot of talent and has now won three in a row. Has a great turn of foot and is able to sit just behind in a nice position when the pace is hot early. A very nice horse and one for the black book.
Ascot R2. Best Tractor Parts Sprint
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
1000m | 12:32PM
A very even affair for Race 2 with Silver Trader, Painted, Pure Adrenalin and Exclusive Honour all getting support in the ring. However, none of these horses would be able to pass the post first.
Pure Adrenalin jumped away quickly as usual to cross the field and lead from Painted and Military Secret. Pure Adrenalin took off around the bend to put a gap on them in the early stages of the straight. However, Pure Adrenalin couldn’t go on and it was Military Secret and the fast finishing Silver Trader that ran home strongly in the final stages to finish first and second.
Results
1. MILITARY SECRET $9.00/$4.20
2. 3 SILVER TRADER $1.90
3. 5 PURE ADRENALIN
Horse to follow:
Silver Trader – This horse was the favourite for this race and took an absolute mile to wind up. However, once that happened it rattled home to get second. I don’t think this horse is far away from a win.
Ascot R3. Minanalytical-Miss Andretti Stakes
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
1200m | 1:17PM
The Miss Andretti Stakes looked like it would be a blockbuster on paper with Beach Express, Mabel Grace and Sir Hallowell all receiving good support on track.
Beach Express and Mabel Grace jumped exceptionally well and put a gap on the field early. Mabel Grace kept pressure on Beach Express who was on the rails through the early stages of the race. They cornered easily in front of the field by two lengths. With 300m to go they were side by side, but it was Mabel Grace who was too strong and raced away to win the Stakes.
Results
1. 2 MABEL GRACE $5.30/$2.30
2. 3 BEACH EXPRESS $1.30
3. 1 CAVALLO PAZZO
Horse to follow:
None Suggested – We will stay with Beach Express who is already on our Black Book
Ascot R4. Myer Fashion Trophy
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
1200m | 1:57PM
Race 4 looked to be a mouth watering clash between Mia China Doll and Mendicity. Even Astar had received some support due to recent strong performances and Red Hot Sax also received some late backing. But the punters only really wanted two.
Mia China Doll jumped well with Mendicity. The pace was relaxed early as Mia China Doll was controlled by Carberry and well held. Mendicity had settled well and looked the better of the two. As they hit the straight Mendicity went straight past Mia China Doll and was joined quickly by Red Hot Sax on the outside. The two fought it out to the line as Even Astar raced home and finished well for third.
Results
1. 8 RED HOT SAX $8.30/$1.90
2. 2 MENDICITY $1.40
3. 5 EVEN ASTAR $2.10
Horse to follow:
Even Astar – this horse is already in our black book and will continue to stay there after this impressive run.
Ascot R5. Ausdrill Hockeyroos Handicap
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
2200m | 2:35PM
Many of these horses had come from similar form lines and had been competing against each other in previous weeks. Jim ‘n’ Jim who had triumphed recently would start favourite with Mystic Prince who had received strong support on track.
Doutable jumped well and was joined by Emaho and Mystic Prince in the early stages. The favourite Jim ‘n’ Jim settled back as it had in recent weeks. The race was run like this for a few hundred metres until Doutable decided to pick up the pace as it over raced. With 1000m to go Mystic Prince and Jim ‘n’ Jim looked very comfortable. At 650m Doutable and Emaho picked the pace up but it was Mystic Prince who ran past them on the outside and Daneclicked who split Doutable and Emaho. It went to a photo and Daneclicked would pass the post first.
Results
1. 5 DANECLICKED $8.20/$3.20
2. 8 MYSTIC PRINCE $1.60
3. 1 DOUTABLE

Ascot R6. Schweppes-Melvista Stakes
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
2200m | 3:15PM
The Melvista 3YO C&G Stakes was an incredibly strong field. Rebelson, Express Service, Saturday Skies, Sireeze, Western Blaze & Trading Day had all been in strong recent form. Rebelson would start the $3 favourite.
Gold Broker jumped well and crossed the field to lead with Express Service who was on the rails. Sireeze sat in a great spot while the other horses sat closely in a bunched field. At the 1200m mark Gold Broker had taken up the lead and had stretched the field out. Sireeze still sat in the best spot and had had a dream run, but all the big name horses were all in spots to have big runs. As they sprinted around the bend Gold Broker fought hard while joined by Another Holdup, however it was Boss who managed to get Gold Broker across the line first from Another Hold Up and followed in by Trading Day and Rebelson.
Results
1. 14 GOLD BROKER $13.00/$4.00
2. 10 ANOTHER HOLDUP $5.80
3. 8 TRADING DAY $1.80
Horses to follow:
We had multiple black book horses in this race including Trading Day, Rebelson and Sireeze. All stay in the black book. Rebelson and Trading Day are incredibly close to a win.
Ascot R7. W.A. Oaks
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
2400m | 3:50PM
After winning Race , G. Boss would start the W.A. Oaks with the $2 favourite in Scarletini. Moreish who had been super impressive in swooping the field in recent runs was the only other horse the punters wanted.
The favourite didn’t jump well, but Boss settled her and sent her through to cross the field. Express worked incredibly hard early as well to cross the field after others had settled and ending up taking over the lead. Kegs Mouse sat on the outside of Express with 1400m to go, while Scarletini sat third on the rail but raced with her mouth wide open. Express stepped the pace right up with 850m to go and this suited the likes of Moreish and Summah’s Touch. As they went around the bend Kegs Mouse swept to the lead but it was Moreish doing what it had done in previous weeks in sweeping the field to win the W.A Oaks easily from Summah’s Touch and Pants On Friar.
Results
1. 1 MOREISH $4.30/$1.60
2. 2 SUMMAH’S TOUCH $2.20
3. 13 PANTS ON FRIAR $6.00
Horses to follow:
Moreish – This horse has won three in a row since going into our Black Book and from those results will be DEFINITELY staying in our selections.
Ascot R8. Ausdrill-Karrakatta Plate
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
1200m | 4:25PM
The Karrakatta Plate was a race with plenty of local talent, but it was the Victorian Ms Funovits with G. Boss on board that punters wanted. She wouldn’t disappoint as Boss got his second win for the day.
A very even start by the two year olds as Camporella jumped well and led from Ms Funovits in the early stages. The two went around the bend in front of a bunched field. Camporella looked incredibly strong on the rail, but it was Ms Funovits who raced past Camporella to give the Victorians the win in the Karrakatta Plate.
Results
1. 15 MS FUNOVITS $4.50/$2.60
2. 4 TRICHOLOGIST $5.70
3. 9 CAMPORELLA $2.00
Horses to follow:
Ms Funovits was ultra impressive and is staying in WA for another race where I will be backing her in a big way. In the local horses, Camporella again showed why this horse is rated so well. This horse is in our black book and will stay there. It continues to impress me with strong performances.
Ascot R9. Tabtouch.mobi Sprint
Adam McGrath | Sat 6 April, 2013
1200m | 5:05PM
This was an interesting betting race. The Rising was the best credentialed horse, but due to the distance and being first up, other horses such as Carry the Nation and Let’s Lighten Up had received support on track.
Modello missed the start slightly, but Boss pushed him through to hold them out on the rail and lead. The Rising sat second with McBlitzam just behind them. As they turned it was Modello who led, but The Rising showed us why this horse is ranked so highly in WA to win first up from a very gallant Modello.
Results
1. 5 THE RISING $3.60/$1.70
2. 1 MODELLO $2.10
3. 10 LET’S LIGHTEN UP $1.80
Horses to follow:
Modello – This horse is in our Black Book already and again will stay there. Boss gave it every chance to win, but it was just beaten by a better horse in The Rising. Modello was gutsy and fought hard all the way.
Good luck when you are punting next at Ascot.
