Barakey all approved for second tilt

Perth Turf Talk | Metropolitan Racing | Wed 27 February, 2013

Unbeaten Barakey showed he took no harm from a barrier incident in last Saturday’s Group I Oakleigh Plate (1100m) in a jumpout at Caulfield on Wednesday morning.

Barakey was favoured to score his 12th straight win in the Oakleigh Plate but stewards withdrew the gelding on vets’ advice after the Group I winner played up in the barriers.

Stewards ordered Barakey to trial before he raced again. Wet weather caused Taylor’s bid to trial Barakey to be postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday but the son of Key Business had no trouble in the Caulfield hit-out.

Taylor rode Barakey himself and reported the five-year-old performed perfectly in the unofficial trial, which the classy sprinter won easily.

''I think the rest of them might have been unraced but Barakey was carrying me and I weigh in at 68 kilograms,” said Taylor.

''He went in and stood up perfectly before jumping well and he had a good hit out over about 700 metres, beating the rest of them easily.''

Taylor said he would take Barakey to Flemington for a look at the course before he tackled the Group I Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on Saturday week.

"He hasn't seen the straight before and when you're are racing at that level any small advantage helps,” he said.

Mmm true it does seem a little silly to be taking on the great mare, but $150k for second place. And her races are usually sit and sprint races, because everyone is too scared to put a hot speed on and stretch her out. Small field, short sprint, equal weight t...

If he was injured, surely you put a line through that run? Too many people willing to bag him too quickly I reckon. Luckygray lapped 2nd rate horses first up here, on class alone. I gave him none in the Newmarket. He's a miler, don't write him off till h...

Brisbane would seem a good option for him - the tracks appear to be similar to Belmont Park and his record there in the sprints over winter was very good.
