Cadenza doubles up for Morton in Magic Millions Classic

Perth Turf Talk | Metropolitan Racing | Sun 16 February, 2014

Cadenza gave trainer Dan Morton back-to-back victories in the $250,000 Magic Millions Perth 2yo Classic (1100m) when storming home to score at Ascot on Saturday.

Morton won the race last year with Camporella and Cadenza, who only made her debut the previous Saturday, proved she was equal to the task when coming from well back to run home over the top of her rivals in the home straight and score in a bunched finish.

Palace Intruder set the early speed with Cadenza smothered away along the inside in a midfield position.

Shaun O’Donnell was able to angle out into running room in the home straight and Cadenza ($9) came with a big finish to swoop home and defeat Rommel ($10) by a short-head with Silver Trace ($4.60) close-up third, the first six horses across the line covered by two-lengths.

A daughter of Oratorio, Cadenza is now unbeaten in two starts but Morton said he was worried during the race.

"She was in a world of trouble getting to the corner, she had a great gate in three and you just hope they can use it, which she did.” Morton said.

O’Donnell said Cadenza showed a great will to win.

"She got a bit hampered early when she couldn’t hold her spot but getting to the corner it just opened up for her, it was a super win.”
