Cantonese arrives for the Cup
The Bjorn Baker trained Cantonese has arrived safely on Western Australian soil for a shot at the $500,000 Group Two Golden River Developments-Perth Cup on New Years Day, where jockey Jim Cassidy has been booked to take the ride.
Cantonese was an impressive six-length last start winner of the Xmas Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on December 12 and Playeronline.com.au currently has him as the $6.50 equal second favourite with Mr Moet.
“The horses arrived on Friday morning in wonderful condition-he really had a good flight.”
“I train the horse out of a paddock so we floated him down to Melbourne and he was in an agistment paddock for a couple of days before flying to Perth”
“I may still send him to a paddock around Perth for a couple of days yet before getting serious with him at Ascot
“Jimmy Cassidy has been confirmed as his jockey-Jim was most impressed with his win in the Christmas Cup and he tells me he loves riding at Ascot during the Festival”
“We have a big bunch of owners who will be making the trip across-one of the owners Craig Tognolini is from Perth so it will be a great buzz for him to have a fancied runner in the Perth Cup”
“Western Australia is such a powerhouse of the Australian economy and if I can pick up a new owner or two while I’m across here it will make the trip even more successful”
Bjorn Baker is the son of legendary New Zealand trainer Murray Baker who had also considered sending across the smart staying mare Jeu De Cartes but decided against it as the mare would’ve got too much weight.
