Edwards strikes instant success in Malaysia

Perth Turf Talk | Australian Racing | Thu 14 February, 2013

Former West Australian trainer Shane Edwards made a dream start to his training career in Malaysia when winning a Group I at the Selangor Turf Club meeting at Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Edwards left Perth at the end of last year but remains at the centre of an on-going investigation by Racing and Wagering Western Australia stewards over the transfer of ownership and bona fides of those activities relating to a number of horses he formerly trained.

Edwards saddled his first two starters since arriving in Malaysia at the Chinese New Year meeting for two winners.

The first of Edwards’s double was Monsili, ridden by Aussie expat Noel Callow, in a Class 4 handicap over (1200m)

Monsili is now being aimed at the Group I Perak Derby.

Edwards’s former good Perth sprinter Rebel Fury then capped a memorable day when successful in the $RM300,000 Group I Tunku Gold Cup (1200m).

Ridden by Singapore jockey Alan Munro, Rebel Fury settled third on the back of a hot speed, before easing around the leaders on the home turn and sprinting away from his rivals to win convincingly by 3-1/2 lengths in a slick 1.08.9.

Edwards said he was pleased to strike with immediate success in Malaysia and indicated that Rebel Fury will be aimed at the Singapore International Airlines Sprint in May.

"This is a big thrill to win a Group I with my first runners in Malaysia, I couldn’t ask for a better start," Edwards said.

"We will next run Rebel Fury in the Penang Sprint Trophy and maybe even a have a crack at the Singapore International Airlines Sprint in May.”
