Five Talking Points from Belmont 06/07

Perth Turf Talk | Metropolitan Racing | Sun 7 July, 2013

How good is Smoko?

The forum has already commenced this one but just how good is our son of Snitzel? With comparisons being made to Miss Andretti, Haylist and Barakey, Perth's latest hype machine made national news following his third win and looks to be a much needed jewel for the Perth summer. With so many impressive traits shown demonstrated during the race it's hard to think WA won't continue its impressive run of top line sprinters.

Great ride or great run?

Summah's Touch did what we expected thanks to an unusual ride from Ben 'Banjo' Patterson. The filly demolished rivals easily in the end and disguised the concern some favourite backers would have had mid-race, however her obvious class paints a very bright picture.

Operational back to the mile

It's been a stunning campaign for Fred Kersley's gelding from Tiger Hill and he attracted punters on Saturday yet again, despite the drop back to 1600m. After 3 wins and a second over the 2000m+ journey it was some surprise to see him line up and not even Paul Harvey's magic could get the job done.

Miss Halloween had most of us fooled

Sometimes we get one wrong and the majority had Miss Halloween rated a lot higher than what she has proven in her past three starts. Going down as a narrow favourite at Belmont, and then again in a Northam maiden, was the entree to an average 6th on the weekend that confirmed she's no superstar.

Belmont isn't for everyone

New Time may well retire without a win in his Belmont column. The six time winner has been racing well and two narrow losses at the track signalled the duck was possibly about to be broken. It was not to be. Meanwhile Sweet Serenity stormed home to record her 12th placed effort from 17 starts on the track. The barrier looked to beat her Saturday, however a win isn't far away.

What was your talking point for the weekend?

If Smoko Continues it would have to be the next contender for a trip east as our next sprinting hope, after this summer of course.. ST will hopefully continue as well..But as good as they are Smoko is in it's first campaign and ST has already had a little patc...
