Focus on trainers in RVL inquiries
RACING faces another dramatic week with two trainers fighting to retain their licences and jockey Danny Nikolic back before a tribunal.
Racing Victoria stewards will today continue inquiries involving Cranbourne trainers Jim Conlan and Ricky Maund.
Conlan has been charged with race-day treatment of Rekindled Interest before the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on October 6.
Conlan has been suspended five times for drug-related matters, the last for an elevated bicarbonate reading in 2006.
Maund appears immediately after the Conlan hearing to learn his fate.
Stewards found him guilty last week of treating Timely Truce on November 10, the day the horse was scheduled to contest the Hilton Hotels Stakes at Flemington.
Chief steward Terry Bailey warned Maund last week that he faced disqualification, suspension and a fine of up to $75,000.
He said Maund was "the only one" who could have injected the horse, unlike the Robert Smerdon case involving blood on the neck of Shewan on Caulfield Guineas day.
Stewards fined Smerdon $10,000 because they concluded the injection was administered by "a person unknown".
Stewards have clamped down on race-day treatment.
Queensland trainer Nathan Schofield has already been disqualified for 12 months for intending to treat a horse with a stomach tube on Melbourne Cup day.
Trainer Con Karakatsanis and his father Tony will answer five charges on January 7 for allegedly conspiring to tube sprinter Howmuchdoyouloveme.
