Race 1 - Triple Play
We head south this weekend with a ripper of a race card at everyone's favourite port city. The weather has hit us hard late on Friday in Perth, but from all reports Bunbury is as dry as a nuns....
Really like this 20 horse strong (4 emergencies to come out) maiden as a betting affair and will be suggesting a triple play betting wise. Infernal Star, Distant Trilogy and New Age have opened up your $4-5 favourites and while all three have looked good in their trials, this seems a fairly short quote for all three. I expect one or two of these will drift to $10+. Sistakini raced well on debut, but from barrier 16 with young Fred Kersley on, will need a lot of luck. It is another around that $5 quote.
So, happy to take on the four favourites, the value hunt begins. Loved Finance's runs last campaign and the Royal Command, Patapus, Amaliemoo & Blackline form all looks pretty good now. The barrier has definitely hurt it's chances but I do believe it could be the best animal here. At $10, this Key Business gelding is worth a spec. Dynamite Jack is another with talent but without a barrier. First up Troy Turner sat him 5 deep throughout in an 11 horse field. To hit the line like he did, showed the horse has a bit of ticker. Second up he jumped only fairly but was used early to find the outside of the leader. He was never going to have anything left with 200m to go. From barrier 15 (11 after likely scratchings), I'd like to see him saved up for one late run WITH cover. $20 looks a huge price.
Just Jude is the final of my triple play. At $101, he is the most unlikely but he is another who has raced without luck and has shown ability when afforded a semi decent ride.
Selections
2 Finance
4 Dynamite Jack
11 Just Jude
Suggested Bet: 35 wins Finance (2). 25 wins Dynamite Jack (4). 10 wins Just Jude (11). $10, $20 & $101 available.
Race 2 - Were All Danehill's Daughter
Danehill's Daughter was a moral beaten in the recent Kalgoorlie Cup and on form goes very close here. I am prepared to take him on as this does look to be a bit of an afterthought with the Kalgoorlie Cup being his grand final. Young Fred Kersley takes the ride which could be viewed as a positive or a negative. As someone who has never said anything negative in his entire life, I will stay silent on this issue.
You could make a case for most of the field, but I am going to chuck the old grey Verdello Blue on top. With very little confidence. He tends to win one every campaign and if he is going to breakthrough, this may have to be it. Should get a nice suck run behind Kirov Boy with just the 54kgs on his back. Loves a scrap.
Selections
7 Verdello Blue
1 Danehill's Daughter
4 Couleur Bizarre
Suggested Bet: No bet.
Race 3 - Track Specialist
I'm in a real favourite knocking mood and I'm going to continue that here. Reveille raced a fortnight ago when putting in a fairly poor effort and was subsequently found to be as lame as were most of the punters who invested in her. Her trial prior to that was only fair so I am not willing to consider the $4 on offer here. She is definitely the class of this race however if Danny Morton has her spot on. Action is your $3 early favourite after winning a pretty weak maiden after a Willy Pike special. The form from that maiden has not stood up at all.
Another Vision looks like a little bit of a special in this. Her last effort when tramping 3 and 4 wide the trip and the WORST part of a very dodgy Northam track was huge. The appointment of the senior jockey here, coupled with the good barrier draw makes her in this up to her eyeballs. Bunbury is definitely her favourite track and she does appear to be ticking every box. An easy on top selection at the $8 quote. She's my best of the day.
Consider a saver with On Trend who has finally drawn a gate this campaign. You can shop around the $25 mark.
Selections
6 Another Vision
7 On Trend
3 Parading
Suggested Bet: 45 wins and 45 places Another Vision (6). 10 wins On Trend (7).
Race 4 - Stable Support
Warrior Of Justice has been backed off the map at his two WA starts to date ($4 to $2.30 & $4 to $1.90), suggesting the camp think they have a pretty sharp one. It's a stable who are usually pretty accurate, so despite the rise from 1200m to 1600m he is an easy on top selection. I suspect the $3 currently on offer might be about the top quote you will see.
Kia Ora Star looks the biggest danger back to his home track, from the better draw and rise to 1600m (we saw how much full brother Kia Ora Koutou appreciated the distance rise), he can cause an upset. Trap To Fools dropping down in distance looks like a poor decision from the Lindsey Smith camp.
Selections
6 Warrior Of Justice
9 Kia Ora Star
1 First Affair
Suggested Bet: No bet.
Race 5 - Dartboard
6 nurofen, 4 panadol and half a bottle of spiced rum and I am no closer to finding the winner of this. A genuine headache race.
I do like hometown horses so will put the consistent Big Caroline on top, who has drawn nicely for her return to Bunbury. She might be a reasonable bet at around the $15 quote. Young Gina is a horse with upside but the fact Pike has opted for the Bobby Peters trained Forceful is a big cross next to that gelding. Cruachan was huge fresh at his WA debut and is a clear second selection.
Good luck in the quaddie!
Selections
2 Big Caroline
8 Cruachan
11 Forceful
Suggested Bet: No bet.
Race 6 - Miller Magic
Another race where I'm going to place myself firmly on the fence and shrug my shoulders.
Variation is the class but now has to carry weight against the more seasoned gallopers without the services of Brad Parnham. On top of that the barrier draw has not been kind, sending him out to the Bunbury carpark. If Randy Tan can find a spot midfield, he will however be awfully hard to beat. Not a horse I usually give much of a rap, but Key To Fame may have the conditions to suit here. Should find the rail with relative ease and he put in a huge effort in the Hannans Handicap. The 55kgs and noted from running hoop in Aaron Mitchell are a good combo for any Simon Miller trained conveyance. I'll put him on top for a bit of Miller Magic.
Expecting a big improvement with Properantes having the inside gate.
Selections
6 Key To Fame
2 Variation
5 Properantes
Suggested Bet: No bet.
Race 7 - Epic Event
I think the sun has gotten to me today (as well as my inability to play anything resembling golf), but it is another race where I am struggling to firmly step into anything. An absolute brilliant race with 6 class horses coming off breaks and others coming through different form races to be here. In these type of events, class tends to prevail and I do think the Lindsey Smith trained, Epic Grey, oozes just that. The draw is a little sticky, though I do think this son of Wicked Style is better ridden with a sit and will appreciate the ridiculous tempo we should see in this event.
Father Knick is coming out of what I would consider the poorer form races, though does appear to have a heap of ability. I presume William Pike was given the option of the Art Series ride, so this may be a strong tell.
If Mikimoto gets a start, throw all the form out the window and chuck her on top.
Selections
3 Epic Grey
12 Ocean Jewel
2 Cognac
Suggested Bet: 30 wins Epic Grey (3).
Race 8 - A Star In The Making
Going to continue on my 'knocking' theme for the day and suggest the $1.70 for Royal Star is gross unders. She is a star and I have no doubt she can win, but this is a mare who was racing over 2400m by the end of her last campaign. Having drawn barrier 10 and with two speed horses drawn outside her, I suspect we will see her restrained to dead last. You'd be brave taking the $1.70.
Red Paddy has to carry a career high weight, but is all class and the $21 on offer looks a huge price. If Azza Mitchell can settle him midfield and save him up for one short sharp 300m sprint, he can definitely finish over the top of them.
Dendee & Conseated are both overs at their $26 & $9 quotes.
Selections
2 Red Paddy
9 Conseated
3 Dendee
Suggested Bet: 25 win and 25 places Red Paddy (2).
