Lopov finally finds it news

Lopov finally finds it

Matt Rigby | Metropolitan Racing | Mon 10 September, 2012

Lopov, owned in partnership by Perth Racing Committeman, Peter Gangemi, broke his maiden status in the West on Saturday with a narrow victory in the 1600m Perthracing.com.au Handicap.

The win was a surprise to both trainer Adam Durrant and connections, who all expected the Savabeel gelding to be needing the run. It was of no surprise to some punters however, who backed him confidently from $26 in prepost markets, into $11 on course.

Daniel Staeck has an incredible knack of guding them home and once again rode a faultless race on Lopov, positioning him fourth on the fence and taking the rails run through to win by a neck on the line.

Lopov was purchased by WA connections after finishing ninth in the Lavazza Long Black (2800m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day last year. He was taken over by Simon Miller who had a first up tilt in the Perth Cup, where he was tailed off after racing wide throughout.

Miller began another  preparation in July, but found the horse a handful, as has Durrant. The secret seems to have been pouring the work into him and he will now be aimed at the Kalgoorlie Cup over 2300m later in September.

Justin Warwick had a multitude of winners at the trots for a while there. Remind me why he then had a minimal interest in pacing.
