Lopov retired
Five-year-old gelding Lopov has been denied a chance to defend his Kalgoorlie Cup title and instead has been forced into early retirement after suffering a major tendon tear.
The injury brought about an abrupt end to a fine career which comprised 31 starts – highlighted by seven victories and stake earnings of just under $300,000. “He has injured it (his leg) in the paddock and it (the tear) is about 20cm up the tendon, so it’s quite big, ” trainer Adam Durrant said. “It’s an end-of-career sort of thing, unfortunately.
“It’s just very disappointing it’s happened, but these things happen in racing.
“We will have to regroup and hopefully myself and the owners can find another one to replace him.”
Durrant was anxious to clarify Lopov’s future in response to widespread speculation last week that the horse had died. “You hear a lot of rumours in the business because a lot of people talk sh**,” Durrant said.
“But most of them are like this – they are unfounded."
