Newman Cup Carnival back to one day

The Newman Cup meeting takes place on Saturday, reduced to just one day this year. Race four will be the Savannah Engineers Sprint over 1200m worth $15,000 with just six runners, all barring Rock of Tara, on the return trip from Broome campaigns.

Rock of Tara sprinted well first up at Port Hedland last year before moving into a staying campaign. The Rock of Gibraltar gelding ran second in the Albany Cup before failing in the Narrogin Cup, both behind Jobeth. Enriching will be the main danger, drawn barrier one in the small field.

Likewise, the Newman Cup to be run over 2100m caters for a number of Broome Cup runners from last weekend. Junior Soprano was probably the best of those to compete in the Cup, coming from near last to run on stoutly for fifth, beaten just over two lengths. He's a horse that does get back and needs luck however.

Nike Heir has been desperately unlucky for Sarah Childs, and is due for a change of fortunes after narrowly missing at his last two runs at Broome. Childs will no doubt be looking to complete her road trip with a win in the Cup.

Angela Smith completes her yearly nothward pilgrimage with two Cup runners in Dastardly and China Causeway. China Causeway loomed as the one to beat prior to straigtening in the Toll Mermaid Hcp (2020m) at Broome last weekend, before peaking on his run and finishing seventh. Dastardly and Nike Heir finished first and second in that race.

Smith was left a run short with China Causeway in the lead up the the Broome Cup, and missed a start with the Giant's Causeway 9yo. That run would have topped him off nicely and he'll be right in the finish of this race and visiting jockey Peter Hutchison takes the ride.

Henry Joseph was also a decent run in the Broome Cup and will compete in his fourh cup in as many starts, having chased the Roebourne, Port Hedland, Broome and now Newman Cups for trainer Anne King.
