NSW first to introduce 'race fixing' legislation.
story from Breeding and Racing.
Amidst fresh allegations out of Victoria of widening investigations into possible race fixing, New South Wales has moved quickly to introduce new legislation designed to protect the integrity of the sport" reports dailytelegraph.com.au.
The proposed Crimes Amendment (Cheating at Gambling) Bill 2012 will set a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment for anyone found to have engaged in or facilitated conduct that corrupts the outcome of a race.
Racing Minister George Souris said the new legislation was "essential for a safe, transparent and legitimate market in sports and racing betting. Quite simply, cheating at any level undermines public confidence."
Referring to the planned legislation, Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley said yesterday the reforms soon to be introduced into parliament will send a clear message.
This opinion was echoed by Racing NSW CEO Peter V'andys who claimed the prospect of lengthy jail time should be a strong deterrent.
