On The Money - Beaufine Sprint Day 13th July
It could have been any other day of the winter season at Belmont. The Beaufine certainly attracted no additional interest with its moderate line up.
Race 1:
Corruscation was always going to dominate the market after he finally put it together at his previous run. Despite that he was a slight drifter from $2.70 to $2.90. King Closet attracted some support, but only after drifting from $3 to $5, then back into $4.60. Jest Envy Her likewise drifted ($5 - $6) while the best money was for Woken ($7 - $5) who could only manage 5th.
Race 2:
Magnifisio was belted off the boards in what looked on paper to be a more competitve race than the market suggested. Early markets bet as much as $2.50 but in betting proper, he was smashed from $2.20 to $1.70. Grey Cheval had to drift ($4 - $4.60). There was specking for Passion Cantata ($12 - $8) while Dueton had the plague ($5.50 - $16). Magnifisio did all the work outside the leader and deserved the win by a neck over the roughie Cherie Amour ($31).
Race 3:
Much like the last race, they picked one out and crunched it in the third. Monumental, with the in-form Chris Parnham and the substantial weight pull, was backed beyond belief ($5.50 - $3.80). As a result, Operational ($2.80 - $3.50), Cyber Crime ($5.50 - $8.50), Rantorini ($4.40 - $5.50) and Uncle George ($5 - $6) were all drifters. Eventual winner Starlight Lady ($31) was relatively unwanted and would be the only thing for bookies to crow about on an otherwise tough day.
Race 4:
Another really good race on paper saw the favourite Mr Utopia steady throughout at around $2.20 and $2.30. He'd left the money in the bookies bag the run prior with a slightly disappointing run. Royal Inferno was fancied to beat him ($11 - $8). King of Wu ($8 - $12) and Money Wise ($13 - $20) were both easy. The Millionaire was steady throughout at $4.80. Flying Time ($5 - $8) was the bookies chance when he hit the front, but when Mr Utopia put his mind on the job (and it did take him a while), the race was over.
Race 5:
Dark Delight opened even money in pre-post betting which was well and truly over the odds as punters were happy to take the $1.65 on race day. They pumped the Flying Spur mare into $1.45 and the money was in truckloads. They just couldn't put enough on her! She got the job done, albeit unimpressively after Parnham gave her the run of the race. There was no money for anything else and obviously either Mystic Dust ($17 - $21) or Sky Magic ($26 - $41) would have provided the bookies result had they been good enough.
Race 6:
Black Romeo provided the win of the day for Mitch Pateman in tribute to his father Michael and it was a credit to him being able to get into the saddle and perform at his best. Despite the emotional reasons for backing Black Romeo, not many did as he was a drifter from $5 - $8. I See Luck was steady througout at $5.50 and $6 while Fort Courage was the best backed runner ($14 - $8). Not a Single Drop was the steady favourite ($3.60 - $3.70) but was not heavily supported. Red Blast couldn't back up his Kal form ($6.50 - $8).
Race 7:
The Beaufine betting was a bit of a farce. Once the late gear change of bar shoes was announced on Right Time, he drifted heavily from $3 to $6 before speculators stepped in and he firmed back to $4.60. He sat outside the leader and was the first horse gone turning for home. Kalahaar was left the strong favourite and was backed from $2.80 to $2.60. Settle Strada had friends and was steady throughout around the $7.50 to $8 mark. Acorns ($26 - $16) was specked at big prices and showed his first glimpse of form this campaign. Settle Strada returned to his best while Kalahaar was extremely disappointing.
Race 8:
With four of the six races going to well supported favourites, the bookies needed some respite in the last. They didn't get it as Galoubay was crushed from $6 to $4.60. As much as $10 was bet in pre-post markets and Parnham put the race beyond doubt, sitting outside the leader and dashing away at the top of the straight. Sweet Serenity ($5.50 - $7), Young Lionel ($4 - $5.50) and Full Steam Ahead ($9 - $15) were all easy. Let's Lighten up ($5.50 - $8 - $6.50) had friends but failed. Will To Win was steady at $10 and $11 throughtout after early specking in pre-post from $17. He ran his best race since the winter of 2011.

Hey Matt. I am entitled to my opinion and as I mentioned in the Beaufine Stakes thread I think it's harsh saying Kalahaar was extremely dissapointing. He jumped from barrier 10 of 10 which is a disadvantage and raced wide throughout according to the steward...
