On The Money - Belmont 17th June

Matt Rigby | On The Money | Mon 19 August, 2013

Race 1:

It was a strange old race where there was a "slow" out for Spin Da Wheels, presumably due to the bar shoes being fitted. He was a big drifter from $3.60 to $4.40 before good money saw him finish up at $3.50. Star of Husson was always under the odds and drifted steadily throughout from $2.60 to $3.40. Midnight Shimmer was well backed and hovered around $3 to $3.20 throughout betting. Sanctitude also had friends, specked in from double figures to $7. But they were no match for Spin Da Wheels, bar shoes and all!

Race 2:

It was a disaster for bookies, particularly on an each way bases. The support for Steel Almighty was unprecedented. Smashed in from $4 in pre-post markets, he was a $2.40 shot when they jumped. They simply couldnt pile enough money on! More Magic ($12 -= $9) and Military Might ($16 - $10) were also specked on an each way basis to make the result the worst possible for the bagmen. To make it worse, Friarfighter ($3 - $6), Moet Me ($9 - $16) and Tarragona ($5.50 - $8) were virtually unlayable.

Race 3:

For the second race in a row, the fancied Impressive Racing runner was unwanted. Grand Crusade ($5 - $8) was a huge drifter with most of the money keen on The Expert ($2.60 and $2.70), Zuccheros ($4.80 - $4.40) and to a lesser extent Pure Glamour ($3.30 - $3.80). Fonzarelli was tried late from $14 to $10 and the rest were hopeless.

Race 4:

The early money was all for Ron's Call. He has proven a costly follow for most punters and Saturday was no exception to that trend. There was plenty of early money at $3 in pre-post markets and then on race day at $2.60 and below. He finished around that quote, which was grossly under the odds in our eyes. Almachino was the other big story of the race, crushed from $9 to $6. As much as $12 was bet pre-post. Tiger Pete drifted as a consequence from $3.60 out to $4 and even longer on betfair. He proved the better horse on the day and a great ride by Natasha Faithfull.

Race 5:

True Gold has been a nemesis for this bookie. Today was the day he'd get his own back. We laid some smaller bets at $12 pre-post and then the majority at $10 on race day. At start time he was into $7. The Alleged was steady at about $4.20 and easy to lay, as was Young Lionel at $4.40 and $4.60. Satruday Skies was the big drifter, from $5 in pre-post markets and out to $8 on race day. Monumental and Huegill were also very easy in markets.

Race 6:

Unlike his previous start, Full Steam Ahead was friendless this week ($9 - $12). Red Blast was another that they just came for in droves. All of the $4.20, $4 and $3.80 was snapped up prior to stepping on the race course and he was steadily plunged from $3.40 to $2.80 in betting proper. It was near on impossible to lay anything else. Mr Arrogance, Verdello Blue, Ask Me Nicely and Friarday all very hard to lay. Hel Cool was specked at longer odds, but this race was a race in one! Ask Me Nicely almost upset the party, but Red Blast always looked like the winner in running.

Race 7:

Another one sided affair. When We Were Kings was backed to the exclusion of all others. It was strange considering he was unwanted at his previous two wins in weaker company. Whomever backed him, decided he was certainly up to it, belting him from $3.80 pre post into $2.40 at start time. Tax A Million carried the only other interest ($7 - $5.50). New Time was the big bookies hope, but he just wasn't good enough.

Race 8:

Alvares was the one that got away. The early money at $4.20 was a tell tale sign he was going to go well but something happened during betting and he was the forgotten runner, wobbling out to $5.50 late. Helena Miss was also a little easy, but did attract interest at $6. State Form was specked from $10 to $8 and He's Starkers $11 - $9. Mac It Is was heavily supported at $19 into $10 with as much as $31 bet on Thursday. Endless Time eased from $7 - $10. Alvares should have been a losing result for us, but we'll take the win on the last race on what was a very difficult day for bookies.
