On The Money - Bolton Spint 27th July

Matt Rigby | On The Money | Mon 29 July, 2013

Race 1:

It was one of the better betting races of the day where Midnight Shimmer was heavily backed from $8 in prepost betting to start at $3.90 at the commencement of betting. The second starter was further backed into $3.60 at start time. Corruscation was a huge drifter from $3.50 to $6 on some of the corporates. Spin Da Wheels was steady throughout at $5 and $5.50. Vital to be Welsh was also specked at double figures but could only manage 6th.

Race 2:

Mr Utopia was kept safe throughout betting, opening at $2.10 on Thursday and steady at evens on race morning. There wasnt a truckload of money for the up and coming 3yo, but he finished slightly in the red. King of Wu was the big drifter from $7 - $9 while Synoptic was the other one they wanted ($8 - $6.50) outside of the big plunge on Profound Effect ($15 - $7.50). The latter has a canny ability to let his supporters down and he did that again on Saturday.

Race 3:

A pretty ordinary betting race where pre-post favourite Black Romeo drifted from $4 - $4.60. Friarday was the one they wanted and he was dreadfully under the odds in our opinion ($6.50 - $4.80). There was specking for eventual winner The Alleged ($11 - $9) and First Flight was steady at $6 and $6.50 throughout. Kim Ability and Sky Magic were unwanted. It was a poor holding race, so the bookies result didn't eventuate.

Race 4:

A couple of strong moves in the staying race for Uncle George ($7 - $5.50) and Reprisal ($20 - $15). The latter was on the basis only of wet track form. Starlight Lady was an alarming drifter $4.60 - $8 and Operational was also easy ($5.50 - $7.50). The Kersley stable seems to have come off their purple patch of recent times. Malaika was steady at $7.50 and $8 while Cyber Crime was backed from $4.80 to $4.40. There was money for Destroy at big prices but he couldnt reproduce his Bunbury Cup form in the wet.

Race 5:

The early moves were all for Marmaa in this race ($9 - $5.50). Stock Trader was $3 and $3.20 throughout while there was specking for roughies Miss Dandy ($61 - $21), Gracetown ($71 - $31) and Earl of Vasse ($71 - $31). When We Were Kings ($3.90 - $6) was surprisingly easy and outside of Keeper Quiet, was the only class in this race. The top weight was steady at $8 but obviously succumbed to her pre-existing injury. I See Luck was steady throughout at $5.50. It was a result for bookies that never should have been a result as the early favourite cruised in.

Race 6:

The Corporation was again a big drifter in the ring, much like the week prior ($6 - $11). Platinum Rocker was well backed from $3.60 in pre post, finishing at $3.20 shot at race time. There was money for Huegill at $101........stupidly. Unlike his previous start, Galoubay was unwanted ($6 - $9) and Fanicio was steady ($9 - $8). Young Lionel hasnt returned in any sort of form this campaign and wobbled from $6 - $8. Classique Ivory ($12 - $9) ran a better race but still couldnt manage a place.

Race 7:

Bolton betting was only fair, but probably the best of the day. It was Settle Strada the clear cut favourite, but he eased slightly from $2.60 to $2.80. Some lucky punters took advantage of the "beggar" button on Punta's new website and filled up on the $3. Kalahaar eased slightly from $4 - $4.20. Sir Hallowell was the one they wanted early at double figures ($12 - $8) but he did nothing. Barnsley Lad was at least 10 points under the odds at his closing quote of $11 and no one wanted a bar of The Entourage at the 1200m trip ($12 - $17). Settle Strada was too good again and the bookies may have been let off the hook for the second time on Bolton Sprint Day.

Race 8:

Hans Up was the early money after in excess of $3 was bet on several corporates. On raceday, he was $2.60 to $2.30 in one of the strongest moves of the day. Grey Cheval had friends again ($11- $9) as did Geiger Rio ($26 - $16). We managed to lay bets about both roughies Its A Merc at $41 and Lord Balthazar at $26. Pininci was easy ($11 - $14) and Dueton was steady between $12 and $10. Tiger Pete was the big blow from $4.60 to $8 and completely unwanted. Hans Up should have trotted in, had he not missed the start and the bookies were let off the hook once again.
