On The Money - Goodwood Sprint 24th August
Race 1:
A good betting affair but they didn't want a bar of the early favourite Dueton, who drifted heavily from $2.70 to $3.80 without as much as a nibble. The surprise of the race was the money for Lee Rani, who opted not to lead and then never got a clear run. She was pumped in from $12 to $7. Tiger Pete was also strong at $2.80 and $2.70 throughout and Modello was also steady in the market at $6 and $5.50. Military Secret was a drifter ($8 - $10).
Race 2:
Once again, last year's champion 2yo was a big drifter from $5.50 to $9 and ran accordingly. Spin Da Wheels is one tough horse and always runs a race worthy of the support afforded him in the ring ($7.50 - $6.50). Thateldo looked the winner on paper and surprisingly didnt get to the front. There was good support from $1.70 in pre-post markets, into $1.50 at jump. Rogeau drifted, as did eventualy winner Via Laurentina ($18 - $21). The race was a "fill up" for the bookies.
Race 3:
Imperial Command led and sped in the staying race and ran them off their legs as the $26 shot. Classique Ivory was steady at around $3.60 throughout and Rantorini drifted slightly to $5. Full Steam Ahead was well thought of, with as much as $7 being bet and into $6 at jump. Mantango was the other well supported from $7 to $6. Destroy was specked at double figures but is racing poorly.
Race 4:
Rose of Choice was the one they wanted in the fourth. $3.20 was bet early and they crunched her into $2.80. Double Jester got the staggers, drifting from $4.60 to $6. Its No Myth was specked from $17 to $14 and Angel Wing in a few points from $31 to $21. Reseetgold was steady around the $6 mark. It looked like another for the bookies when Double Jester loomed as the unwanted runner, but Rose of Choice burst through late and spoiled the party.
Race 5:
A woeful betting race and a lack lustre spectacle. The favourite was unwanted by virtue of his unbackable price. Talent Show was specked at $41. Reimbursement and Miss Tipsy Topsy were easy. There was a bit of place money around for The Entourage and Disco Bling had none (no friends and no hope). Settle Strada did as he pleased and I doubt many of the bookies really cared.
Race 6:
A rare A Durrant winner with very little interest in the betting ring. Recode eased from $8 to $12 with out much interest in winning the sixth despite two good lead up runs. The two they really wanted were the favourite Hans Up ($2 into $1.85) and quite incredibly, Pure Adrenalin ($13 - $7). Most of the money for the latter was on race day at around the $10 mark. Teen Idol had friends at double figures and was probably unlucky not to get up. They also let Its A Merc go out a $15 shot after heavy support at his previous run.
Race 7:
Another good result for the bookies as one of the early fancies drifted quite considerably in betting and got the money. Dangerously opened up a $7 shot but wobbled out to $10 with very little interest in the ring. Galoubay got to $4 before good support back to $3.60 and Sireeze drifted heavily to $8 before good support back into $6. Black Romeo had friends ($7 - $6) while Glintz and Flashy Doll were alarming drifters. There was a little early specking for Flashy Doll however. The only other interest was in Dash For Home ($11 - $9). Dangerously was another welcome result for the bookies who'd have been cheering him home over the more fancied Dash For Home.
Race 8:
The last provided the best betting race of the day, in fact, the best betting race for a month. Danablue was heavily backed from $6.50 in early markets and then from $5 to $3.80 in betting proper. They didn't single him out however with good support also for Not A Single Drop ($7 - $6), Miki Two Toes ($8 - $6), I See Luck ($12 - $8) and Right Honourable ($14 - $13). Fonzarelli was well supported early from $9 to $7 but drifted back out to $10 on the back of support for other runners. Times Are Changing had the plague ($10 - $17). Danablue was too strong and justified being made favourite by the punters.
