Perth Cup favourite Mr Moet has 59kg and history to overcome

Perth Turf Talk | Metropolitan Racing | Thu 27 December, 2012

Adam Durrant’s in-form gelding Mr Moet heads the weights for the Group 2 2013 Perth Cup (2400m) which will take place on New Year’s Day at Ascot.

The five-year-old has been allocated the weighty task of 59kg, an impost that will see him break history if he can add the staying feature to his impressive list of wins.

Since the introduction of metric weights to racing in 1972, the heaviest weight carried to victory in the Perth Cup so far was 55kg by Saratov in 1989.

Durrant is looking to take Mr Moet east for the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival and his form so far this summer has certainly earned him that right.

The son of Mosayter won the Group 1 Railway Stakes first-up, was second in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic and also won the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes.

Also high up in the weights for the Perth Cup is 2011 Kingston Town Classic winner Playing God (58kg) who has been allocated two kilograms more than stablemate God Has Spoken (58kg).

CB Cox Stakes third placegetter Ranger has been allocated 55.5kg while 2010 Perth Cup winner Lords Ransom will have to lug 55kg over the line if he is to claim a second title.

The much-fancied CB Cox Stakes runner-up and Mr Moet’s stablemate Chester Road will carry 54kg as will Sydney traveller Cantonese who is fresh off a six-length win in the Christmas Cup at Rosehill on December 15.

Colour Correct joins the pair with 54kg while the rest of the field is set to carry 53kg including WA St Leger winner Pop Culture and the Patinack-owned Shamardashing.

I like Bridgestone and Pop Culture. Would be nice for Colin Webster to win the Perth Cup. He has gone close to winning it over the years. Cheers, PC.
