Perth Cup purse now $500,000
The Group II Perth Cup (2400m) will be worth as much as the Group I Sydney Cup (3200m) after Perth Racing announced a prizemoney increase for the New Year’s Day event.
Prizemoney for the 2013 Perth Cup will rise $100,000 to $500,000 to join theSydney Cup as the third richest handicap race run between 2400 and 3200 metres in Australia.
The Caulfield and Melbourne Cups are the only Australian staying handicaps that carry more prizemoney than the Perth and Sydney Cups while the prizemoney increase has enabled the Perth Cup to equal the prizemoney of the Group II Karrakatta Plate.
Perth Racing chairman Ted Van Heemst said the prizemoney boost would assist in attracting top stayers from the eastern states to run in the Ascot feature.
"The announcement is a continuation of the commitment by Perth Racing to elevate the status of the race and build on the success of the change in distance to the classic 2400 metres,” he said.
"Perth Racing has always placed a high value on the Perth Cup in terms of its history and the strength of the brand and the value that generates from the club.”
