Smerdon fined $10,000
Smerdon has been fined $10,000 by RVL Stewards when they observed blood seeping from the neck of Shewan on race day.
While tests detected no prohibited substances, it was ruled that there was too much fresh blood for the wound to have been re-opened from the previous day's treatment.
Smerdon's case is different from that of Nathan Schofield, who was found with tubing equipment at Geelong on Melbourne Cup Day. It could not be provent that Smerdon was directly involved in the administration on race day, there is no evidence of what might have been administered and there is no evidence of who might have administered the treatment.
Expect the trainer to appeal the penalty.

is that a concern???...that something may have been given and it couldn't be detected??? I wonder if the blood samples taken have been sent off to Hong Kong?
