weekend-review
This week's review by The Diva
Race 1:
A number of Karrakatta hopefuls stepped out in the Westspeed 2yo plate. The big firmer from pre-post markets was Oratism with as much as $21 bet on Thursday. She was also well supported on race day, got the pie run and won accordingly. The runs of the race were Vampi Lass who had to work overtime to sit in the breeze, and Low Tide who flashed home late to go down a half length.
Horse to follow: Vampi Lass, Low Tide.
Race 2:
The early money was all for Boy Mambo. Surprising for a runner from that stable to be supported so stoutly. He was much easier on race day. The big money on Saturday came for Assets and Cash but he was one of the first under pressure chasing the leaders. Coughlin's Law, the three year old chasing a Derby start, has always shown that me might stay and that he did. Pike gave him a great run and he rewarded the owner's patience. Daneclicked ran on well while Boy Mambo will be retired.
Horse to follow: none.
Race 3:
Black Tycoon was always going to be suited in this race with plenty of apparent pace. He was in the black on Thursday when markets were posted but was steadily backed in to $1.80. The hopelessly out of form, The Corporation, surprisingly led. Black Uma allowed him to do so then took the breeze but Ryan Hill erred by restraing and not letting this free striding galloper run. If he had done so, I have no doubt he probably wins. He was left a sitting duck for Black Tycoon, who nearly brought himself undone by laying in, but was still good enough to get home. Doutable copped the backwash and was probably right in the finish until interfered with. Disco Bling has lost the plot and is nowhere near the horse that won three in a row last year.
Horse to follow: Black Uma
Race 4:
Wahkeena was unwanted in the bookies ring, even after her impressive first up effort. She sat outside a good pace and boxed on solidly to beat the well supported Stock Trader, who had every chance to beat her. Royal Inferno finished of strongly for third. Little Shadow was unlucky having to sit wide and Miki Two Toes was disappointing and probalby should have passed a few more with the run he had.
Horse to follow: Little Shadow
Race 5:
Dark Rock led and was allowed to roll along by Brad Parnham, which suited him nicely and he won with authority. It was announced that Rons Gem would take a sit, which was a puzzling tactic since he won the previous start at 100/1 after leading. The tactic backfired as he sat three wide from barrier three. Chong Nonsi was the first horse gone while Northerly Gale ran some sort of race, sitting four wide no cover at her first run in two years, beaten just 3.5 lens. Be So Ryski was the disappointing favrouite, yet again.
Horse to follow: Northerly Gale
Race 6:
The money for Soonest was quite incredible. He won his midweek race with ease, but they can be funny races, especially with the rail out and this was a much harder race. Despite the huge money, Young Lionel started favourite and was well supported aswell. He has been a costly horse but did all the work, sitting wide and won well this week, rewarding those loyal punters who stuck. Even Astar was ridden cold this week after flashing home from last at her last run. Once again, she excelled with that racing pattern and we might see her ridden like that from now on. Flash Gift went horrible as did Helena Miss. They were the first two horses under pressure.
Horse to follow: Even Astar
Race 7:
Most of us thought Galliletto would get the easy lead and be much to strong in the seventh but Philby dashed out of the barriers from 11 and led them easily. Subsequently, Galliletto was made to do a little more work than most thought but was still way to strong for this field. True Gold was ridden closer to the speed, but I dont think that really suits him and he's better off ridden cold. Nonetheless it was a decent run. The Tenby Friar ran his usual eyecatching race. Flashy Doll was ordinary, as was Kalahaar, who seems a much better horse at the fresh end of his campaign. Flag Officer was the subject of specking at long odds. It was obvious from his trials that he would sit back in his races this campaign. He was a mile off them turning for home and the run wasnt so bad.
Horse to follow: Flag Officer.
Race 8:
Let's Lighten Up was heavily supported into favourite in the last and the pace set up front by Pure Adrenalin and Thunderluv'n played right into his hands. It was a flattering win, coming from midfield to trounce the two leaders, who were both good runs. Thunderluv'n particularly battled on well after having done all the work outside the leader. The Underworld ran a much better race after a horrid winter campaign. If the Gangemi boys have him right, he's a handy horse on his day.
Horse to follow: Thunderluv'n, The Underworld.
