Trainer Mark Reed - Resumption of stewards inquiry
RWWA Stewards yesterday resumed the adjourned inquiry into the charge issued on 19 March 2012 against Mr M. Reed under Harness Rule of Racing 190(1), with the particulars of the charge being that as the licensed Trainer of TAIAHA NZ he presented it to race at Gloucester Park on Friday 7 October 2011 with the prohibited substance alkalinising agents, evidenced by total carbon dioxide being present at a concentration in excess of 36 mmol/L in plasma being detected in the post race blood sample taken from the gelding. Mr Reed had previously pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The previous sitting of the inquiry on the 30 July 2012 was adjourned in order for the Stewards to consider the extensive expert evidence and all other submissions in relation to the charge. A previous scheduled date of inquiry was required to be deferred to yesterday due to illness of Mr Reed and his council.
At the resumption yesterday, further evidence was heard from RWWA Veterinarian Dr. Judith Medd and submissions made from counsel for Mr Reed. Mr Reed was not in attendance due to illness.
After deliberation, it was the unanimous decision of the Stewards that the particulars of the charge had been sustained and accordingly Mr Reed was found guilty as charged.
On application from counsel for Mr Reed, the matter was adjourned to enable the production of character references and a comprehensive written submission addressing the question of penalty. Such submission is to be provided to the Stewards by close of business Friday 28th September 2012, following which the Stewards would consider and determine the matter of penalty.
Mr Reed remains suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry pursuant to the provisions of Harness Rule of Racing 183 (d).
