Wouldnt you just love to pick his brain for an afternoon! I know i would!! I dont think there is a owner/breeder in Aus that can get close to him besides Godolphin

Agree, very smart operator. But even with all that success I doubt the operation runs at a profit. Costs must be enormous. Uses Westspeed to advantage so that would help a bit. If he does run at a loss, then there's tax losses for his other businesses.
  • DamienWyerDamienWyer    7,984 posts
I think I read somewhere, that you cannot offset your losses in other businesses just because you own a horse breeding operation. I think they were talking about them being stand alone. Some of Bob's purchases in his good seasons, especially for those sales late in the financial year, I wouldn't mind netting are just as much about writing off profits with additional expenses than anything else.

I think his best years are still on the way. His broodmare band is deeper than it has been in many years and his stallion share ownership is at an all time high in quality.

It's not going to get easier anytime soon in Perth.

does he or those close to him punt?

if not the mail and money must come from the trainers and their camp etc

I know Lloyd Williams back in his day used to punt heavily on his own runners

Didn't @bookielover say Lloyd cleaned out Betstar when Fawkner won the Caulfield Cup and Eskander put the for sale sign up soon afterwards?

Yes he does. Not every horse or every race but has $2-300 on when he has a bet.

    WOW!

how often does he usually purchase ready to run horses within WA? first I've ever heard, usually he's offloading stock not buying more... I hope the owners got what they wanted, Bob must have a big opinion of her

Robert Edwards ahead of the game for a change.

I'm sure she will go to Vancouver. It's the one Stallion that Bob has shares in that connects with her damline.

I hope he doesn't send her to Animal Kingdom or Pierro, they just draw a blank.

Every dog has their day....And I loved how some questioned it so coarsely....hahahaha

@Tivers has anyone asked him if he is interested in a younger one with similar bloodlines?? Could send it straight to stud too!!!

@-) =)) =))  Joking OKAY...Just Pharking Joking...am still really keen to see what sort of rising 5 year old we have!!!!! hahahahaha I think I am VERY funny...And in case you get asked....No I'm not selling my share... :-*

He has a share of Kinglike also although that horse is still racing.

  • DamienWyerDamienWyer    7,984 posts
I couldn't remember all that he now has shares in. He is in something else as well but memory fails me.

Kinglike is reasonable through Danehill over Zafonic and Jeune mare lines but not as dynamic as the emerging cross that Vancouver would bring. Certainly a very good choice for a second season covering though.
  • TiversTivers    7,720 posts
Vancouver was the suggestion, yes (and why we chose to sell to Mr Peters).
But of course he has the right to do as he chooses.

you guess had any chance of retaning a small % in her, or doesn't it or cant work like that?

At one stage last year Bob sold his car business for around 25 million dollars so I doubt the horses would send him bust as he obviously has stacks of winners. He started in the racing business along time ago, I can remember him racing Paragon of Virtue with Don Clarke training it back in the 80s. Bob deserves all the luck and good fortune he gets as he puts plenty in ! Imagine how poor some of our Oaks and Derbies would have been without his runners going around ?

yeah but imagine how less poor some other owners and trainers would have been off if he wasn't as successful, the only ones that wouldn't have benefited would have been the punters as the fields would have been more open and equal and harder to find that winner

I am not sure what you could do Hash, let him buy as many horses he wants but he cannot race them in races worth more than 50k or races that are LISTED and better ? He puts a lot of money in and no rules to stop him so I think he will just carry on winning our good races

    Oakland park another
Although they benefitted the whole industry with bulls ect but there will be opportunities with some of he's rejects /trash becoming someone elses treasure
