Boaz prepost on Tabtouch is $19 and $2.80 a place. Drawn directly behind Runoneover he's $8 and $1.70 on my book. Will be interesting to see how he goes.

A couple of weeks ago Jambiani perfectly drawn in barrier 11 to go three back the pegs behind Onerunover and Ideal Alice was $12 a place ( wins the race ) this Friday night from an awkward barrier four just $3 a place. Sometimes think they get these markets a little wrong. But then again so can I.

Boaz definitely overs at those prices but can't find them on Tabtouch.

Yes not surprising...that's more like it.

Dumbfounding how they could come up with $19 and $2.80 drawn behind a almost certain leader and stablemate. However @$11 and $1.95 have lost a little interest. Think he's way way off the horse he was but @$19 and $2.80 he doesn't have to be! @$2.80 a place yes for me but $1.95 no thanks...especially after missing $2.80.

Unfortunately Jum diddly squat. Just like my running between wickets - too slow off the mark.

Happy as a consolation prize though that I did notice it and thought that's a good price...it was there quite a bit of the morning until some idiot ( me ) mentioned it but nah the smarties would have been onto that price.

However overs @$19 and $2.80 does not necessarily equate to a collect either. But at least the odds were in your corner.

Goes alright this horse...He will know his way around, has been here before, ran 2nd to Chicago Bull in the Derby when ACL drove him for Purdon.

The only one I did nab for a good collect was gosh must be over a year ago...there was a horse Flaming Hero odds on for Colin Brown , a certain leader and winner in gate two...it was the one horse I was interested in Everton VC just for a place...thought if he is around $2 a place I'm hitting....about lunchtime Friday after looking out for the prices all morning the markets came up and Everton VC was $3.60 a place...threw the pyjamas off haha and was in the car speeding up to the tab...when I got there was $3.40 pulled out everything I had including shrapnel and put on for the drum.

Flaming Hero straight to the front and Everton VC trailing for genius Nathan Turvey and that's how they finished. Everton VC finished up starting about $1.70 a place from memory.

Hoof note : They've got it all back.

Its a bonser handicapping system we have, a huge incentive to attract new owners when a 1.49 horse with $475k in the bank, unlucky not to have a million when you add up all the 2nd's he has run to a handy type called Lazarus, and he can waltz into GP and race in a C5 for $8500 on a Friday night leaving nothing but a few crumbs for the rest of them. Honestly, talk about fiddling while Rome burns, they tinker around the edges with the easy stuff and give every runner a 100 bucks for turning up whilst a gigantic elephant in the room continues to go unnoticed. The new season will see a lot of very good horses start with a clean slate in C0's and smash everyone up at $1.04 starting prices until the owners get punch drunk and wander off disillusioned. Or you can go to Keller in an R3 and better and get beaten up by something that has won 25 races and a $150k and its penalty is that it draws the back line and still smashes you. Makes perfect sense to me. Handicapping "system" Bah Humbug.

Must admit never followed the handicapping system closely at all. Never could understand it. But does seem a proliferation of odds on faves in trotting. Just Tuesday night eight races - six odds on favourites. Some like the shorties fair enough but it's a bit lopsided.

Boaz backed in from $19 and $2.80 to $11 and $1.95 then $9.50 and $1.70 and now a further Malachi crunch into $8 and $1.50.

    $19 & $2.80 :-c

    $8 & $1.50 :-q

Now about the right price, particularly the place.

    $2.80 was huge overs.

Yes true Chariots...it's irrelevant if you like the horse...horses chance first...price second. But was after the best of both worlds.

$2.80 a place was huge overs for sure.

A snap shot from the past and a few queries.

    Howard Porter Memorial:
1981 1st Melton Neptune Ben Geerson 2nd Classic Prince (Reg Denney or E.J.Denham?) 3rd Vicki's Lad Lindsay Froyland
1982 1st Gammalite Phil Coulson 2nd Neeron Boy (Fred or Bill Kersley?) 3rd Agnate Mke Beech
1983 1st Gap Road Fred Kersley 2nd Casey O'Tara Lyle Lindau 3rd Sinn Fein Greg Harper

More I look at it...and I am not knocking the horse because he has been a ripper....I  can't see Beaudienne finishing top 4......that seals his fate, should win it now even though I reckon he was sub par last time in.
  • MarkovinaMarkovina    3,336 posts
The Beaudienne bubble busted last campaign

There is no gloss or sheen on BB anymore ( unless the horse had issues which havent been disclosed

I might be wrong  - but i thought there was a 1700 metre race BB led on its ear - and Chicago Bull from an awkward gate - was back about 8th - giving BB  about  6 lengths and it just toyed with it

Honestly Thereugo would have given a better kick than BB that night

BB is just one of Hallys 2nd stringers these days - wouldnt back it at 500-1 to win the interderminion - just not good enough .

The main reason liked Boaz for the place especially @$2.80 was the #10 gate...am a bit of a sucker for the leaders back scenario...drawn behind a likely leader and stablemate that's what kicked in.

Any other draw would have bypassed.

So....do.... Lets Chase The Dream... Skippy Rascal and Donegal Rundlescreek  have to hand up the front or breeze to the "freerunning" Thereugo this week ? The aforementioned three all have gate speed .
I would like to see the hindsight brigade lay out their forecasts pre race...to be revisited post race for scrutiny.
    Speed maps .....pffffft

From what I've seen of Let's Chase The Dream he would be able to carry Skippy Rascal , Thereugo and Donegal then drop them off on the corner and still beat them home he's many classes above them. But did read Ajax getting rolled at 1/40 ( $1.025 ) So who knows ?
  • curmudgeoncurmudgeon    2,417 posts
He struggled to get around GP last time here with Purdon

  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    10,951 posts
Fair enough...probably wanted any other draw bar the one especially with Thereugo scorching across. Looking forward to this opening race. But for me Lets Chase The Dream is $1.04. ( Have seen them get beaten at that price just the same ).
  • curmudgeoncurmudgeon    2,417 posts
Donegal Rundlescreek can fire across all inside her I feel. Thereugo takes a brief while to fully muster off the arm.
LCTD has gate speed but may struggle to hold.
Given the intrigue I don't know why this race is R1 on the card actually.

  • JayJayJayJay    8,624 posts
LCDT could get buried on the inside, and he might have difficulty seeing he wobbled around a bit when he was here as a 3yo...and he may well get beat, by whom, I don't know, it is an intriguing race as others have said....but the real issue is he shouldn't be in this race, he should be in the Porter Memorial or the other open class race with fellow half million dollar earners. No criticism of the connections, they are using the system but its the system that is and has been rooted for ages and nothing gets done about it, when everyone concedes that no penalty for winning multiple $200k plus group 1 races is nonsense.

Never fear JJ .....that previously mythical handicapping beast the WIN $ system will put a stop to this nonsense....eventually.....somewhere in the few years....promise.

Lots of comments on GP and we are still over a day from start time. Good to see. Recently a GP discussion has attracted over 1.1k views...remarkable. That's comparable to some of the racing threads. Will never have the overall interest racing has but good that pacing has a healthy discussion and viewer.

I agree with your point  re Race 1 - quite a few people are still at work when its being run

Its got alot of interest and quality that race - should be about race 6 - terribly slack by whoever is promoting marketing harness racing - and forget about marching girls and brass bands - 95% of people who are hooked on trotting ( from a very early age - about 12 in my case ) are hooked on it by the actual horses/race - excitement etc

As for the handicapping sysyem - ive got no idea how they do it these days ( and i now owners have to get a return - otherwise they burn a hole in your pocket very quickly - many years ago i used to own the slowest  well bred square gaiter that Stewart Rothacher ( who was a master trainer at the time ) tried to get going - but  the handicapping system  used to be 2.30 and 2.29 - they were the 2 - three year old races you could win - then you were a Beginner ( 2.28 ) then an Improver ( 2.27 ) . 2.26 was Progressive - 2.25 ive forgotten 2.24 was Advanced - and so on - and that system seemed to work well

  • curmudgeoncurmudgeon    2,417 posts
Trained a horse once that was by Sebastian.....a Rothacker home grown stallion......who was out of Worthy Stavely ...the mother of the champion mare Angelique. The mare could run a bit but I didn't really have too much of a clue then....some would say still don't !!
Sebastian was the Rothacker hometown I think Marko ?

  • MarkovinaMarkovina    3,336 posts
Angelique rings a bell - champion mare as you say

I actually bought that trotter ( talk about an athletic looker ) at the Sydney yearling sales out at Randwick - i can remember - i had about 3 trainers ( who specialised in trotters ) approach me as soon as i made the winning bid - Peter Anderson was one of them - trained at Londonberry - allways had a handy trotter

However Stewart Rothacker ( even though he was in Vic- i think he was in Edgewater or Bridgewater - near Bendigo ) at the time was a mini mini mini - David Aitken - in that every trotter he got - seemed to improve 30 metres overnight - he had green colours i can rememember that - so i transported it down to him ( another cost )

But he told me - the horse was hopeless - and that i owe him about $400 for training - and he said he will keep the horse - and that squares everything away - and we will call it quits - and thats the last i heard  from Stewie - and i had about a 7k hole in my pocket  !!

Lets Chase The Dream and Dana Duke are poles apart in ability and I am sure Junior would want to hold the lead if he could but may not be able to. He has the choice of sitting on Thereugo or rating outside of it. Should prove superior either way as long as it handles the track.
