GP 14/5/21-The Pure Steel

Harness & Greyhounds
Not a meeting i'll be pinning the ears back at but still happy to have an investment or 5.

R1: No1 Bettor Finish win. Banking on Jnr being able to get this horse out better than he has in the past and being hard to catch. Far from reliable with a hitch in his gate but he is strong and is one of only a few for the night I thought was genuine overs @$11. Machlani @$26 is a silly price aswell.

R3: No2 Lightning Jolt EW. Shanway should win but Lightning Jolt will at least give him a scare sitting 1,1 on the back of Medieval Man.

R4: No4 Belcatherine Win. Backing her thinking/hoping she gets the 1,1 on the back of Perfect Major but she might end up one further spot back. She is an extremely dangerous sniper, happy to gamble her first up.

R5: No3 Plutonium EW mid tote. Small sample size but you cant miss its last run and another one I have getting the 1,1 behind a strong horse. Expect a bit of a drift in the price with money coming for the horses from the Name stables.

R6: No3 Lawrence small win. In behind the leader, can dive bomb it.
+1 -1

Terrific that the greatest of all time, Pure steel, gets a race named in his honour......but buried away in the late Autumn Calendar as a non descript $30k race with zero promotion is hardly showing due respect. A perfect scenario for qualifying heats and a build up. No problem with it being for horses with HWOE less than $40k but utilise the chance to give due recognition to an absolute icon.....and make it a stayers race......2900m......because he was unquestionably the greatest stayer we ever witnessed.

Old Steelo destroyed more than one generation of FFAllers....the tougher it was the better he went.

One thing which would be interesting with Pure Steel - did any of those great horses back then ( and their were stacks of them ) have a positive Win/Loss record against Pure Steel

And they have to be wins - if one runs 6th and the other runs 8th - then who cares - they dont  count

I know Koala King ( after having the world perfect sit on it ) beat it narrowly a couple of times at Moonee Valley

Like Gammalite was a great horse - however Popular Alm destroyed it in head to head  meetings ) 20 wins to 2 ( South Australian Derby and a NZ Interdom final going the Sydney way )

A few got him late due to his racing style, especially in Sydney and Melbourne, and mainly as an older horse. Frosty Imp, Lena Vale Lad, Carclew of course, Speedy Guest, Sporting Son, Ardstraw?, Melfield Tyros, Locarno, Infield?, Taronga?, Rare Chief, Ramon Adios?, some of them right at the end of his racing days. Royal Force got him one night in a Pacing Cup Heat, also Don't Retreat, Satinover ....and the best side of the ledger sits with Markovina and Koala King with 3 victories but the short answer is no, none of them had even close to a positive win loss ratio.......and there was a large number of absolute quality horses that needed therapy on the horse psychologists couch after racing him. I don't think Rip Van Winkle, amidst all the braying of his connections, ever really recovered after being put to the sword.Rip did beat him once in a heat of the APC. 69 wins at better than 50% for a horse that really didn't have blistering acceleration (and I say that carefully)......well there was nothing else like him.

The other point of interest with Pure Steel - and it is a long time ago - so im testing my memory

But its pacing gait - it seemed to have a shuffling type of action - maybe it was from the stand starts - a bit scratchy - but i thought its actual pacing action was unique - thats why i remember it - i can sort of still picture it now

Daisy cutter Marko, with a turned in "swinging" front that belted his near side tendon boot. Shoeing was critical, had a "squared off" rather than rounded front to the shoe, hand made by Laurie Robinson There is a video lurking around You Tube that shows Laurie actually making the shoe at the forge and anvil....absolute master farrier at work.

Boom Time a victim of his own success...no start for a month.....ineligible to start in $L5 LT $25k, and the HWOE LT $70k races have been falling over......so little option but to leave him home.

And contrary to rumours, Rabchenko was not "first up"....5th run back sine first up on April 2nd.

Re Bettor Finish first leg of my all up.
What do you do drive him out or hold him together and settle third on the fence.
Got to remember probably instructed to hold up.
Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

No issues with Bettor Finish, did mention he's not a fluent pacer which is why he was the price he was, I thought if he held up he could win and jnr was the man to do it but not to be.

On a personal note backed 4 little ducks after being talked in to Deorse so not fun but a length total over all 4 races would be a different story.

Great run Belcatherine, obviously very much needed it as she was flat out keeping up at stages when she could normally travel sweetly but brave to keep on coming.

Thought Voaky on Perfect Major was the drive of the night to put the leader away but still have enough to hold off any swoopers.
