Dante's Volonte on trial for spring trip

Resurrected sprinter Dante's Volonte will be on trial for an Eastern States spring campaign when he clashes with feature event specialist Idyllic Prince in Saturday's $80,000 weight-for-age Goodwood Sprint (1300m) at Belmont Park.

The Simon Barrass-trained Dante's Volonte, an Ascot winner at seven straight starts in 2008-09, fought on tenaciously and ran an impressive first-up third to Casper Cowboy in last Saturday week's Belmont Newmarket (1200m).

Dante's Volonte has been troubled by allergies in the past year and did not race for several months before he carried 57.5kg under the Newmarket's handicap conditions.

"He's thrived since his good first-up run and will be suited by weight-for-age in the Goodwood," Barrass said.

"Everything depends on how he performs in Saturday's race, but if he goes as well as expected, we'll start checking on suitable Eastern States sprints for him over spring."

Trainer Jim Taylor said yesterday he would be represented in the Goodwood by Idyllic Prince, who is making a hat-trick bid, and classy sprinter Vain Raider. Taylor said he had decided against racing last-start Belmont Newmarket runner-up Shock Value in the Goodwood.

"I don't think Shock Value is up to weight-for-age standard at this stage," Taylor said. "But I'd expect Idyllic Prince and Vain Raider to go well on Saturday."

Idyllic Prince won the Goodwood in each of the last two seasons. The $870,000 stake-earner launched a run of feature successes with his first-up Goodwood win 12 months ago.

He won the Farnley Stakes (1400m), Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) and Lee-Steere Stakes (1400m) at his next three starts. He was spelled after a second to Ortensia in the Winterbottom Stakes last November.

The gelding has not raced since his Roma Cup (1200m) second to Vain Raider on May 29, but has boosted his fitness with a win and a second in recent barrier trials.

Casper Cowboy will be entered for the Goodwood, but trainer David Harrison said yesterday the bay was a doubtful runner.

"His feet problems have flared again since last Saturday week's win," Harrison said. "We've had a long-term battle to overcome his troubles

Of to Melbourne Shaghai i read if you get the Chocs all the best JTs horse is the one to beat Id Prince IMO

See how it goes of course, JTS horses have the score on the board, but all accounts Dantes has thrived from its last start.

Any chance Marasco would be first up here, or is he a while off?

If it's going to melbourne it would want to thrash the field it faces in the goodwood.

Good luck though mate i wish i had a horse as good as him.

If DV can thrash Idyllic Prince then it will be winning in Melb

Idyllic Prince would have measured up in Melbourne - very under rated horse who has had issues but still banked wins every year of its career

goodluck Shanghai - I thought his first up run was very good

I wonder where my old mate Danny Beau has dissapeared to?

Idyllic prince would win a group 3 over there easy. If anything flemington or Caulfield would suit him more than any perth track.

If he was a 100% sound over his entire career he could have been anything.

Idyllic prince came within 1 1/2 lengths of ortensia in the winterbottom. And the way they clipped along in that he would go well in a group 3 over east.

There are some strong group 3's like the bletchingly stakes but there are plenty of weak ones like the Standish Handicap. He would have rolled Royal Ida this year.

A lot of people don't rate our horses when they go east, look at Scenic Blast , when it went over, you certinly got great odds on its first run.

Hay List, but we all knew he would perform.

Key to money run 2nd in a group 2 I think last yr there.

and IP would of won a group 3 or 2 if it was ready for it and was given the chance.
jt would tell you for sure it would of and still could suppose.

    Correct Shanghai,

But I rightfully remember alot of arm chair critics bagging the hell out of Hay List going east.

Famous Roman finished within an arms reach in the Sir Rupurt Clark Stakes.
  • I said if DV thrashes Idyllic Prince it will be winning in Melb

the Goodwood should be a nice race

Im with GOM here. A G3 horse here isnt a G3/Listed horse there and thats all IP is...a G3 horse. He'd be similar to horses like Pinnacles/Nine Tales/ElMandon.

Good luck with Dante's Shanga, but I will be laying this for everything on the weekend - he'll bounce for sure and certain 2nd up after a long lay off.

el mandon? Idyllic prince would lap el mandon

Love Golden Heart and it's somewhat un-tapped.

IP has finished a length and 2 lengths in front of Oroya Gold at its 2 most recent starts. Questionable whether OG has been in suitable races in its 2 VIC starts but look where its finished. Look at the horses that have finished around IP at its recent starts and ask yourself if they would win in VIC....Vain Raider, Grand Nirvana, Black In Time, London, Tarzi, Spirited One (now in NSW)....

For mine, IP is a very good WA horse, one of the better ones, but highly doubful it would win a GRP race in VIC, especially as an 8yo now.

Your right Linc, as long as you back them when they win, who cares where they race!

Vain Raider wont run out 1300m IMO
  • ShanghaiShanghai    381 posts
JT did it , with Vain Raider its last win over 1200m - Claite got to front set the speed at a correct tempo and stole it from IP, storming home.
However I do expect it to be a trully run race, with Spitfire,Vain Raider,Goldern Heart setting a good tempo up front,
    Which will set up IP.

hope all the Dante's fans took 6.5 from VicTab. I saw it... but not for long. im not convinced myself with it being 2nd up after long spell and injuries etc but the 6.50 looked to be value for punters who are keen. They are still well above player, IAS etc at 5.5
