The opening Day of The Port Hedland Turf Club's Season on Saturday was a roaring success with an excellent crowd and exciting racing.

Jockey Grant Lemos celebrated his return to Port Hedland riding the first three winners on the programme.

Lemos has ridden plenty of winners in the North West and had a stint riding in Queensland since, returning late last year. He started his treble with victory on the Bob Bell trained Rock of Tara in the $8,000 Hedland?s Spirit 1026 Handicap (1200m).

The former Victorian let the tearaway leaders burn up fuel in the early stages but nearing the home corner Lemos made his move on the Rock of Gibraltar gelding.

The result was never in doubt down the straight with Rock of Tara winning easily from Silver Business and Corolla.

Lemos then teamed up with Mundijong trainer Jack Cockell to win the next two races on Western Chill and Red Jacamar.

Judging by Saturday's results Cockell is set for a good trip North with a very handy team of gallopers. Red Jacamar did a great job to rail through on the inside to snatch victory in the $7,250 Rob?s Bobcats Handicap over 1200 metres.

Whittingham looked to have the race parcelled up but in the final 100 metres Red Jacamar rallied strongly through a narrow inside run to grab the race on the line.

Rex The Robber was most impressive in winning the feature race on the card, the $9,000 Hedland First National Handicap (1200m).

?Rex? jumped out of the gates very quickly and set-up a commanding lead in the early stages. Down the straight the Len Healey trained sprinter held on very well to withstand a late charge from Certain Magic.

Jockey Jeffrey Berry has a good association with Rex The Robber who is sure to win more races this campaign.

Berry (below) rode a double, also winning on Pentire Point in the $7,250 Hedland Home Hardware & Garden Handicap(1400m). The former Victorian is better known as a stayer but came with a blistering run from last to first and already has become a contender for the cup races in the months ahead.

Tenpin is another horse suited to a longer distance but the 1200m sprint was no problem for the Dixie Solly trained galloper. He won with plenty left in the tank and was well handled by apprentice jockey Aaron Rogers.

Tenpin upset a good old-fashioned plunge on Kingtar who wasn't disgraced running 2nd, whilst Canny Sam and Mr Solitary both put in eye-catching runs.

Grant Lemos went to Carnarvon on Sunday and rode a further 3 winners to cap off a great weekend.

The Port Hedland Turf Club were delighted with the opening day. A lot of children took part in the fashion parade and activities while Hedland First National Real Estate contributed excellent sponsorship for the opening day.

The Races are on again in Port Hedland this Sunday with Free Entry again for racegoers.

Maybe it should read... Shane Harcourt trained Pentire Point.... Give credit where it is due, its a big job getting a winner even if it is in the country.

Hey Silks, It is also a big job to get any sort of information from any country club's like Nigel's write ups - he has supplied me articles without fail four 3 or 4 seasons to my web site, he is the only onein WA. I'm sure he gave credit to Shane at the track.
