The Sheik Mohammed-Godolphin-owned stallion was just about to unleash his final burst in the Group 1 event when he faltered and sent champion jockey Frankie Dettori hurtling to the Ascot turf.
Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, said in a statement: "It is a tragedy. Unfortunately we have lost him as he has had to be put down."
Rewilding was one of the main chances in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The race was eventually won by three-year-old Nathaniel, who upstaged Europe's heavyweight champ Workforce and So You Think's stablemate St Nicholas Abbey.
Winning trainer John Gosden was one of the first on hand to attend to Rewilding before the racecourse vet euthanised the four-year-old.

So You Think (the former Bart Cummings stable star, now trained by Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle in Ireland) ?has been odds-on for all of his starts since moving from Australia to Ireland earlier this year & will face a maximum of 5 rivals at Leopardstown after featuring among yesterday?s acceptors?. The ?apparent superiority of So You Think over his rivals is demonstrated by Snow Fairy being next in the betting at 5-1, with the market 10-1 bar those two?.
Abu Dhabi Irish 2000 Guineas winner Roderic O'Connor & Recital (who has not run since finishing 6th behind Pour Moi in the Gr1 English Derby) are next in betting at 16-1. The Dermot Weld-trained Famous Name & Dunboyne Express (trained by Kevin Prendergast) complete the field. (Aug 30)

I have decided to go to The Curragh next Saturday, as they have a Super Saturday of Racing apparently ?? Most likely go to the National Stud in the morning as well.
Maybe some photo's when I return to Perth.

So You Think not entered for Cox Plate:
Kingston Town?s unrivalled Tatts Cox Plate three-peat will not be equalled this year after So You Think was unfortunately not among the first declarations for the $3 million race, which closed this afternoon.
Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien opted not to proceed with a campaign towards Australasia's weight-for-age championship with the five-year-old, who has won the past two runnings of Moonee Valley's iconic 2040-metre event, when prepared by Bart Cummings.
His absence, along with that of stablemate Cape Blanco, leaves defending Emirates Melbourne Cup champion Americain and the Luca Cumani-trained Sahara Sun as the Northern Hemisphere-prepared horses among the first acceptors for the Moonee Valley event on 22 October.
But while So You Think won't be there, Cummings may yet have multiple runners with the legendary trainer boasting four live entries, including the similarly-named three-year-old Do You Think. European import Illo, Moonee Valley specialist Precedence and another three-year-old, Polish, are the others who may yet provide Cummings with a sixth win in the race.
Cummings' quartet are joined among the 96 first declarations ? up seven on last year ? by most of the other Aussie names near the head of markets, with the exception of Gai Waterhouse-trained mare More Joyous.
Whobegotyou, third placegetter last year and unplaced favourite in 2009, remains on track for another crack at the race with Mark Kavanagh-trained stablemates December Draw and Midnight Martini also paid up for.
Chris Waller's Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner My Kingdom Of Fife, another import, the Mike Moroney-trained Glass Harmonium, Kiwi gun Jimmy Choux, and classy Peter Moody-trained mares King's Rose and Lights Of Heaven remained entered along with boom three-year-olds Smart Missile and Helmet.
More Joyous's BMW Caulfield Cup-winning stablemate Descarado was also among those paid up for in the Tatts Cox Plate, but was not among first declarations for the 2400m Caulfield feature, which also closed today.
A total of 117 horses were paid up for in the $2.5m BMW Caulfield Cup ? an increase of eight on last year ? including eight internationally-trained runners, half of which are trained by Cumani.
Sahara Sun, this year's Chilean Derby runner-up who will make his European debut at Doncaster tomorrow night, is also entered and is joined by stablemates Manighar, Bauer and Drunken Sailor, who were all in Melbourne for last year's Spring Racing Carnival.
Americain has also been paid up for the BMW Caulfield Cup with the John Moore-trained Mighty High, scheduled to arrive from Hong Kong this afternoon, the Mikel Delzangles-prepared Dunaden and Brian Ellison's Saptapadi the other international first declarations.
A strong team of Australian and New Zealand entrants remain in line to repel the international invasion, however, headed by last year's Emirates Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday, Victoria Derby winner Lion Tamer, star Western Australian Playing God and Classic-winning four-year-old mares Shamrocker and Scarlett Lady.
First declarations for Caulfield's two three-year-old Group 1s over Spring ? the $1m The Age Caulfield Guineas and the $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas ? were also taken today.
Peter Snowden retains a powerful Caulfield Guineas hand with Helmet one of five first declarations for Darley's head trainer, while Smart Missile is one of four potential starters for Anthony Cummings.
Patinack Farm's head trainer John Thompson has the strongest Caulfield Guineas hand with eight of the 92 first declarations, headed by Boys On Tour.
Thompson only has three left in the Schweppes Thousand Guineas ? which attracted 85 first declarations ? but they include Pane In The Glass and Kneeling, while Hallowell Belle, Hurriyet and Plucky Belle form part of a strong seven-filly hand for Victoria's premier trainer Peter Moody.
The picture for the four races for which first declarations were taken today will become even clearer on Tuesday, 20 September when the second round of acceptances are taken.
