Looks an intriguing race. A rematch of the Arc quinella in Solemia and Orfevre, plus Mt Athos. Jackalberry and Red Cadeaux from the Melb Cup. Orfevre at home should prove too good, but like in the Arc the last furlong may test him

Don't rule out Jaguar Mail & Sri Putra. Though Melbourne Cup form didn't stand up with Makybe Diva it should be noted she met weaker fields than those that ran in this year's cup. Mount Athos should have won the cup if ridden more sensibly and can't be ignored. Red Cadeaux and The Jack likewise but with a leaning towards Athos.

Can't have any of the Cup runners at 2400m WFA in Japan. Would have suited Dunaden perfectly IMO, but this type of race is certainly not Red Cadeux's go, and the weights make it hard for a horse like Mount Athos at this stage of its career (even though it was clearly the best run in the Cup). Will stick to the Japanese runners and back them on the local tote.

One thing to keep in mind Kermie is that the Japan Cup is normally a hot pace which gives my previously mentioned runners a big show.

In addition let me say it is a pity Jaguar Mail didn';t make it over here previously as I think it would have secured a Melbourne Cup for sure.

True. Would have loved to have seen more Japanese horses come out here recently. Oken Bruce Lee was one of the biggest runs I've ever seen when it just missed running down Vodka a few years back. Thought it would have been a great chance if it came here for the Cup the year after, but never quite reached the heights again.

Rulership, to be ridden by Craig Williams was a massive run in theTenno after gettting way back and rattling home for third. I would have liked to see him come here for the Cox Plate after he destroyed Ambitious Dragon & co in HK in the QEII by 4 lengths. I was keen on Orfevre too, and may still back him, but that last bit of the 2400m of the Arc was a worry. You don't see that often-a horse crusing going straight past and then getting caught. Was it the wet track? Maybe, but he has won on wet ground in Japan

I do not claim to be an expert on Orfevre, but to me his tendency to not win races seems to be a mental issue rather than a lack of staying ability. If you haven't seen it, take a look at the running of this years "Hanshin Daishoten" over approximately 3000m. An amazing run, as was the run in the Arc.
IF it it does things right would take a mighty horse to beat it.

There seems to be a lot of conjecture that the Stewards Enquiry of a couple of years ago??, and the controversy on that occasion when they took the race off of the horse that crossed the line first (Buena Vista), possibly has affected the decision on this occasion.
I must admit that the first time I saw the head-on of this years race (shortly after the finish), that the result would be overturned but was not quite as adamant after watching it again. That being said the winner did give Orfevre a decent bump a couple of times knocking him off balance. With the margin only being a nose it certainly created some controversy.
