    I found this:

AR.88. Riders may use spurs provided they are blunt and of a type approved by the Stewards. [amended1.8.01] L.R.88 (a) In accordance with AR.88 a rider may only use ball type spurs with a minimum ball diameter of 10mm. (b) Any rider using spurs of a type other than specified in part (a) of this rule commits an offence and may be punished.

10mm is small....Im going to look at the replays tonight (Luckgray) see if it gets a dig and response.Obviously the jockey does not wear this as a fashion accessory..I await your findings Carey

Not convinced it makes a huge difference we had a jock wear them to give one of ours a bit of a gee up as he was not putting in like we thought he should be and he still performed exactly the same. Not saying it doesn't work for some horses but certainly made no difference to ours and it was the jocks idea not the trainer/owners by the way

    part of hkjc rules....

    (1) No spurs may be worn in races, barrier trials or in track work.

    from japan rules...

Art. 95 A jockey must not ride in a race using spurs. Provided, however, this shall not apply in the
event the Steward of the Meeting deems there is a compelling reason.

probably no coincidence that they are the 2 best run jurisdictions in the world and both have massive turnover.

I still sit here amazed that they are legal to use and that they are not considered equipment like blinkers, winkers, tongue ties, etc..All pieces of equipment that can be used to enhance a horses prospect..

Sorry for sounding like a broken record....but I’m really surprised by this..Maybe that just goes to prove how naive I am....

good to see some honesty jordan, without any of the blathering.
i don't actually have any opinion on the spurs themselves mainly because i have no knowledge about them and no spur data to interrogate to gain that knowledge
what i do object to is not being able to get that info.

rio it is not too difficult see what the problem may be.
it's not part of the HORSES gear, rather it's part of the rider's gear and a great fashion accessory apparently!

Agree that spurs on or off should be a gear change even if it is open to conjecture as to what difference they make.

Carey, Hong Kong and Japan do indeed have massive turnover with vast populations but JRA statistics show that turnover has declined each year since 1997 and is now about 50% of what it was in that year. Take inflation into account and I would suggest that the JRA would be far from happy where the industry is heading. Hardly an example for Australia to follow in all things racing.

re japan, you may be correct aquanita as i have no real idea, i just know that it's several syndicates favourite jurisdiction
as they're guys betting all the bikkies, i just assumed.
although on 2nd thoughts it is hard to fathom what you say, considering the joint was a closed shop basically until fairly recently

    anyway, back to spurs.......

do not forget japans dire economic situation, aquinita.

Spurs are a huge form factor in my opinion and as with all gear changes used expertly by the very best trainers and jockeys. As with blinkers etc they sometimes have no impact -- but believe me sometimes they can! I am a lousy mounting yard judge but always wanted to see who had the spurs on and who didnt... most of the 9 to 5 WA jocks never put them on but the most interesting are those that sometimes wear them and sometimes do not.

stuff it.....here is a photo proving you are wrong. You can apologise any time you like and maybe think about taking up a position as an AFL umpire.

Your photodoes not show the spurs and thus neither proves nor disproves the legality of the spurs worn - I would only apologise if I were wrong.
I don't wish to further debate the matter but simply - Good Luck to those that chance their arm in racing and succeed.
been waitintg a week for your reply but seems you have conveniently dissapeared. are you blind mate?
