Yes it's that time of the year again when I start to get excited.
The red dirt starts to get pounded by hooves again. It all begins this Saturday at Port Hedland, and it is only 2 weeks to Broome from there.
It's the time of the year when we find out which horses have left stables, and transferred North for the winter.
Anne King has dominated Port Hedland for the last couple of years, jusst like Tommy Pike has done in Broome. Will they do it all again this year?
Word on the street is that the Dave Casey / Meryl Hayley team won't be in Broome this year.
Are the dulcit tones of Max Simmonds going to fill the Gantheaume Point course this year, and if not, who will be filling his shoes? I think he retired after his 40th ??? Broome Cup last year.....I hope I am wrong.
So forget about your race fixing allegations down there, forget about Mailman's rants, set yourself up to enjoy some good, hard salt of the earth dirt racing for the next couple of months.
As Big Kev used to say, "I'm Excited!"
footnote: How do you think Mailman would go trying to explain the differences in performances from week to week up here? I wonder if his system accounts for having dirt thrown in your face?

What is recommended, stay for a few days? Or....?
Also, does the town cope with all the tourists or does it get too busy?
is mike all geared up, bc4e?
i'm not going up this year, i'm all broomed out...
Sorry Paulo8, missed your reply before, was too busy creating my countdown calander.
Broome gets busy, but that is what makes the Cup such a good week. But believe me I am more than happy by the time my friends leave on the Sunday. If you are making plans, you need to factor in to attend Ladies Day Tuesday 13th August and Cup Day Saturday 17th August. Then leave town, clense your kidneys and sleep for a couple of weeks.

The Derby meeting scheduled for next week has been postponed till June 29th (originally the Cup date). The Cup will now be on July 20th, originally a weekend off for the Broome / Derby season.
Circumstances beyond the control of the committee.
Whilst an inconvenience for all involved, no doubt this decision was made in the best interests of all concerned.
I wish the new committee all the best in organising their season.

As much as we enjoy going to the major tracks on the east coast for a bit of a look, we also get a lot of enjoyment out of going to these country meets..real people, real racing...you don't expect to win...and the bookies generally ensure you dont!!!!!

Swindle lives in Broome, Ernie McCreed comes up from Esperance for the season, David "chicken and spaghetti" Poletti comes up from Geraldton for the season and drives taxis during the week, West Coast (Peter Oliver and Craig Coombe) travel from Port Hedland when there is a meeting, or have an agent if they can't make it, and Neville " Old Mother" Hebbard comes up for the season and drives Taxis as well. There is not a lot of money in the ring up here and competing against the tote is hard work.
For the big meetings we are joined by Neil Gill and Brett Arthur from Kalgoorlie and Peter Cribb from Perth.
hey bc4e, that a. robinson riding up there, is he the nsw hoop adrian (?) robinson.?
anyone know where willie arnold is?
Broome is a tourist town, and as such there is no money around. Woodside were going to build a gas processing plant at James Price Point, which would have been great for the local economy, but that has now been shelved. The tree hugging hippies that were vehemently against the development are yet to come up with another project that will inject hundreds of millions of dollars into the local economy to take the place of the Woodside development. Unfortunately growing dreadlocks, not shaving your armpits and basking in the glow of your unwashed body odor isn't an industry that can support a town...... By the way I was pro gas.
As for Swindle, his name is Mike Windle, so there was never another alternative as far as a nickname goes. He even has "Swindle" number plates on his car, and used to run a nightclub called "Swindles".
Falcon, I'm pretty sure it was the same bloke, obviously served his time and looking for a change. Watched one of his rides yesterday and aggressive is an understatement. Got stuck into one at about the 600 and never stopped until he got cut off and had to change direction. Put him on a decent horse and I would back him for sure.
