Paul Ambrosoli and Danny Bowen

News through today that greyhound caller in NSW, Paul Ambrosoli is retiring after 50 years of calling. In some ways very sad that another doyen of the calling game who started calling in the golden era of racing, is hanging up his glasses. Ambrosoli said that Zoom Top, remember her, was the best greyhound he ever saw.

On a very sad and tragic note, well known Norther New South Wales trainer, Danny Bowen who trained out of Ballina NSW, took his own life having suffered from severe depression for many years. I was introduced to Danny about 6 years ago at a race meeting at Murwillumbah. He was a reasonably slim, good looking man with a full head of black hair who cut a fine figure at the track.

Speaking  to him, you would never had thought that he had the illness. I happened to see a photo of Danny back in January and I was shocked. In fact I couldn't believe it was him. He had blown out like the Good Year Blimp, and his dark hair had gone grey. I couldn't understand how or why he would let himself go like he obviously had. Now the picture becomes very clear. Deepest sympathy to his family.

Well known Melbourne trainer,Tony Vasil has withdrawn from training his horses as he tries to battle severe depression, and John Sadler has just hopefully overcome his battle with this insidious disease and is back training.

Many horse trainers around Australia are doing it pretty tough, and if anyone knows a trainer, or anyone else for that matter, be they family or friends who is doing it tough, please try and look out for them and help them wherever possible. Depression claims too many lives, when many of those lives could be saved.

I was working in TABs in Sydney in the 70s. At 19:00 Mamma Lena would start her Italian language programme on 2KY with regular crosses to Paolo Ambrosoli at Wentworth Park and (in those days) Harold Park for the greyhound calls. Ads were courtesy of Nick Skali, Parramatta Road Ashfield  - he'd moved up from Melbourne. Fond memories.
I've never met Danny Bowen - that's a sad story bookielover. The black dog can bite a bloke at any time - they're going through the motions but hitting a low ebb. Everyone is busy in the modern world, but we should all take the time to keep in touch with old mates - particularly if you haven't heard from them for a while. Hey everyone - ring an old mate tomorrow.
