First post here---I like Respondent with the weight drop of 4kgs, best run last start for the season, out to Derby distance of 2400m, fair barrier at e/way odds. I see he is to wear blinkers so does anybody know if this is first time and/or did he wear them as a 3yo??

Why is the barrier draw of significance in a 2400M race ? They have around 500M to the first turn and most races are run so negatively that any range of tactics could be used. Danny Miller will be off and gone by the time they hit the river side, that shouldn't come as a surprise but most will get caught napping, and they will then have to decide at which point to begin the chase down because his horse won't be stopping.

Bob Peters saying in the West Australian, that his horse will have to go back from that draw, must be someone's idea of a joke. Every horse he owns goes back.

    no racing at Ascot Saturday.

But here's the incredible one, no trotting at Gloucester park new years eve. They're racing on the 2nd of Jan!!

Gloucester Park has not run on New Year's Eve for a couple of years now. Another victim of the cost of the security demanded by the authorities.

In 1993 I see when Field Officer won carried 46.5kg with Peter Knuckey , that is light even for a 3 year old. Weights are certainly different now. 54kg will be the minimum for this Cup.

Thats not correct Damien ,over the last 12 months or so they have been more positive Real Charm has been sitting handy in all her wins

    I think you mean that's "not 100% correct" dungy... It's correct about 98% of the time but not 100%.. :D =)) =))

I'm still with Bass Strait, even with the bad draw he'll sit in behind Kirov, follow him up, wait for a gap when they start to spread and tuck in close to the pointy end of the field..

    Perth Cup Facts and Figures

The Perth Cup was first run in 1887 and won by First Prince.

It held Group 1 status from 1980 to 1992 and Group 2 from 1993.

In the past 25 editions of the Perth Cup 5 mares have won the race: Talent Show (2013), Western Jewell (2012), Luna Tudor (2000m), Palatious (1994) and Mirror Magic (1992).

Mares in this year’s race include the first and second favourites: Real Love, Balmont Girl and Lucciola.

Trainer Adam Durrant will be represented by three runners: Real Love, Mr Moet and Chester Road.

Durrant prepared the first two placegetters in 2010: Lords Ransom and Ma Chienne.

He also placed second with Mr Moet in 2013.

Lucciola, along with Global Flirt and Son Of Something will spearhead Justin Warwick’s team.

Warwick won last year’s Perth Cup with eight-year-old Black Tycoon.

The last trainer to win back-to-back Perth Cups was Alan Mathews: Palatious (1994) and Field Officer (1993).

He also was successful with Mirror Magic the year prior (1992).

Warwick’s daughter, Lucy, will ride Lucciola.

The only other female rider to win a Perth Cup was Kyra Yuill who piloted Western Jewell (2012).

Warwick and Jerry Noske on Red Blast represent the female gender in this year’s event.

Of the jockey’s riding in this year’s feature Peter Hall, Peter Knuckey, Pat Carbery, Jarrad Noske, William Pike and Brad Parnham have enjoyed previous victories.

Hall, who won aboard Black Tom (2006), was also placed on four occasions: Ma Chienne (2010), Black Tom (2005), Indigo King (2004) and Victory Morn (2000m).

Hall rides top weight Mr Moet on Thursday.

Carbery takes over from Shaun O’Donnell on Gino Poletti’s Classique Ivory.

Carbery teamed up with trainer Alan Mathews and Lottila Bay in 2001.

A year later he ran third aboard Shoeless and filled the same placing with Senhor Da Gama in 2012.

O’Donnell is in search of his maiden Perth Cup with Balmont Girl, prepared by, Paula Wagg.

The last female to train a Perth Cup was Angela Smith who had Time Frame (1997).

Troy Turner is out to shed his Perth Cup hoodoo on Ask Me Nicely.

Turner was placed on Westerly Breeze (2008), Free At Last (2005), Bold Mirage (2003), Matriculate (2000), Rogan Josh (1999) and Beau Heed (1997).

Steven Parnham has been placed in three of the past five years: Ask Me Nicely (2014), God Has Spoken (2012) and Largo Lad (2010).

Of the trainer’s in Thursday’s Perth Cup Durrant, Warwick, Grant Williams and Neville Parnham hold the best record.

Williams, who won with Westerly Jewell, has WA Derby champion Respondent entered.

Parnham has a two-pronged attack with Bass Strait and God Has Spoken.

Parnham trained Luna Tudor, ridden by Jason Brown, to victory in 2000.

His veteran galloper God Has Spoken was runner up last year and gain in 2012.

The oldest horse to win the Perth Cup in the past 25 years belongs to 10-year-old Lottila Bay (2001).

Ask Me Nicely (8), God Has Spoken (8) and Global Flirt (8) are the oldest runners entered on New Year’s Day.

Barrier six with four wins is the most successful barrier in the last 25 years: Crown Prosecutor (2005), King Canute (2004), Crying Game (1996) and Ros Ref (1995).

Barriers two, three, five and fourteen are next with three wins apiece.

Different sponsor this year Golden River Developments. I'm sure last years sponsor or co-carnival sponsor was giving a bunch of tickets? Not this year though?

Same 'sponsor' as last year for the Cup.

I like Operational as a place chance, he's a genuine stayer and if dash serves it up a mile from home it will take the sprint out of a few. It's runs haven't been to bad and drops weight.

Interesting that the RWWA press release that Gray posted makes no mention of the distance change. A case of 'don't mention the war' perhaps?

How would she go in the eastern states? The real test is over there? Would she win a Group 1 over there? If not a Group 1 over east then at least a Group 2, Group 3 or Listed race?

Agree about the 3200 it makes the race but some of them were going backwards along way from home over 2400 the extra 800 and a few of them would be arriving home at 7 o'clock tonight just in time for the ABC news.

Theres enough 2400m races for the better type animal to compete in. 3200m puts it out there to everyone! I bet most trainers would love the challenge.

I believe the biggest test for a racehorse is 3200m. It test's the horse's heart, lungs and it's courage. It would of been a good test for Real Love too.

Kirov Boy would love it , he looks like he would still be whacking away after 3 laps! He must have a good ticker. Would love to see him over 2 miles that's for sure, he would be going the same pace for 3200 and still be strong on the line!

Adelaide Cup would be a good race for Kirov Boy
