Breeding

I hear you Dale and even though I go through pedigree's closely, I know others that go on sight only and they have been in this industry for many years.+

Spudley - I wonder if any tested positive??? Probably not as the breeder would have to be charged with something - administering a banned substance?? I see another foreman going by the wayside..haha - and the sale annulled.

I'm sure even Gerry couldn't keep that out of the news!! If I paid the $500(due to muscle formation that I thought was suss, otherwise I wouldn't have it done), the very next day I'd get a second opinion, as it wouldn't be in MM's interest to have a positive result!!

Software packages are a waste of time at sales..
do the breeding and conformation yourself

Damien, good post pal, can you give me your comments / feedback on this colt that never made the sales please, I will be racing him myself as the MM guy that came up by himself said he was too big. Sire: Vital Equine - Dam: The Auld Yin. As you will see the dams half sisters first foal 'thunder fantasy' won a group 2 in Melbourne and was bought to race in Hong kong, Sha Tim today by the way. Yet the pedigree never made any difference to the MM guy. Grateful for your thoughts on the pedigree, by the way the first 3 foals from my mare were too small to race.

Selkirk over Storm Cat has bred two stakes winners from a small sample pool, and is regarded as being red hot. Danetime over Shareef Dancer has thrown just the one. But those are the only results for this breeding with the remaining 14 crosses being inconclusive most likely from a lack of anyone having success or even trying. You have plenty of Mill Reef, Roberto and Northern Dancer buried deep ins that mating, so something may come of it. In short your Colt is bred more on the positive than negative, many being offered at the sale would have liked this result in my humble opinion.

Some of those Vital Equine stock can get pretty big on top as yearlings. He has had 99 runners for 46 runners including his latest crop with just the one stakes winner and a couple stakes performed. The numbers are not great and priced at around $2,000 his stud fee is reasonable value for money, but he doesn't have commercial prospects for anything other than outstanding yearling types and then only here in Perth.

Giant's Causeway as a damsire has produced 35 stakes winners, most notably in Australia via Bel Esprit, Magnus, Fastnet Rock, Oratorio(Stravinsky). Around the World Giant's Causeway seems to cross well with a number of sirelines but grandsons of Danehill figure slightly more than other lines. i would be weary about close up breeding to Storm Cat, it does produce but at a slow rate for the number of times it has been tried.

I hope this helps in some small way. Good luck with the Colt.

Thanks Damien, I am going to race him myself so have to work for the next couple of years. I haven't seen anything around paddocks moving as effortlessly as him (we call him big Pete). While you are at it, I also own 75% of gracie may and own her mum Miss Libia and miss libia's younger 2yo by gods own and her latest 4 month old weakling by scandal keeper, she is bred to storm cat this mating, your thoughts please on any of them breeding wise.

I'm working my way through the remainder of the Perth sale, then I have Adelaide to have a look at. I already made comment on the Storm Cat breeding, I had a look on the Studbook to see where you sent the mare subsequently. I don't mind Planet Five but not for your mare. Stick with grandsons of Danehill.

All good judges I have ever seen buy at Sales choose on type, then they have a look at the pedigree, But type is No1 on their list

So by looking at all the pages of these yearlings on offer, then doing an extensive analysis of each of their respective breeding's, I'm wasting my time ?

I just want to know because I'm wondering why all the good judges didn't buy Group 1 horses like Scenic Blast, Famous Roman, Magnifisio and Luckygray, all of whom were sold for less than $100,000 and all at Premier Sales here in Perth. All of those yearlings were sold in contested bidding at auctions where plenty of people had them out of their boxes.

Not everyone looks at yearlings the same way. Everyone has a different eye for a horse. But facts r facts most trainers or owners buy on type. Then they look at the breeding to see if there is something they might like or dislike. As far as I'm concerned you can take your nicks and crosses and throw them in the bin. Who is to say Dan Morton saw something in Scenic Blast that someone else didn't. Same could be said about Jim Taylor and Petrol Power.

I had another  great day with the staff of Murdoch Equine today. Whilst there, I was also able to photograph a visiting Farrier and a specialty Equine Dentist.

Here are a couple of shots of the Farrier's apprentice, Scott Wilson.

This is Equine Dentist, Dr Martin Dolinschek. This was an incredible procedure to witness, but the content is so graphic I have decided to publish only one black and white image, so not to offend.

Earlier in this thread you would have seen that I am staging an exhibition at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale here in Perth. In an effort to promote the Industry to a wider audience I have photographed several different roles within, that in some cases people may or may not have previously seen. So far I have covered Jockeys, Trainer, Farrier, Dentist, Surgical Vet. I'm photographing a leading Owner on Saturday evening at his farm and I have one more trade in mind if time and his work permit it.

The images of Ellie Cockram and Sonya Price have had in excess of 10,000 views on Facebook. The Murdoch album has passed 6,000 views with twice as much having just been added from yesterday.

The metallic and canvas prints up to 75x114 cm will be on display for the two days of the sale and have been organised at my own cost from photography to printing and display. Furthermore, I am donating to Murdoch a couple of those pieces for permanent display following the yearling sale.

So I hope that answers your question, even though I don't understand what makes you ask.

Just a suggestion, if you are looking to promote the industry to a wider audience, why not try exhibiting to a non racing audience?

Like the photos, by the way - that dentist can keep his job!!

I'm really open to any ideas or suggestions, but without Corporate support and not just financial, but premises as well, finding that target audience might be a little difficult. Shopping centre promotions are usually commercial, as in they charge high premiums for floor space. For this exhibition I am just hiring easels from an art display supplier to stand the larger pieces on, but in a high traffic area or with kids floating around, this wouldn't be as good.

I will talk to a mate after this show as he owns a very nice car showroom and he might see a cross promotion in it somewhere.

In respect to the Dentist, the size of the tooth that came out that originally was only showing less than 2mm was enormous. He told the students that it was pretty rare to see the growth on it. Of course I have pictures but in glorious colour, they may cause weak stomachs to flip.

I will put a couple on but some may find them confronting.

The horse was fully medicated and secured in a stand up  box that Martin brings with him on site. I will find out in the days ahead on how the horse is doing, but seeing this thing come out it has to be better.

After this extraction, Martin and I had a chat about racehorses, or what he see's mostly as retired horses as he works  mostly in equestrian circles. He remarked on one in particular that as a just turned four year old, he was asked to consult on it's teeth. This was a poor performing, pretty ordinary doer and not a great eater. What he found was that the horse improved remarkably with corrective dental work and he wondered if had that been done early enough, would in fact the Owner still have a racehorse ? Who knows what that horse originally cost to buy and train, but my  guess is a hell of a lot more than an expert consult on an annual basis.

Something to think about heading into yearling sales with clients hopes and dreams on the line.

Have used Martin for some years now and it was well worth it.
We had some teeth problems such as parrot mouths etc and he managed them
    very well.

This evening I had the pleasure of traveling to one of the finest stud and training facilities in Western Australia. Alan & Sue Olive of Gold Front Thoroughbreds, have built over the last four years an incredible facility for horses on 300 acres just South of Gingin.

Again one or two of these images will  be shown at the upcoming Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Perth in mid February.
