:-? only horse to have broken 60 secs over a 1000m in the race. Maybe?? it was just the best horse in the race and the punters got it wrong :-??

Is there a pre post market available for the Magic Millions?. Surely a Perth based bookie must have one available?. We are only a week and a half out . Must be early odds somewhere?.

Umm Saturdays field is there to be seen. Unless a trainer wants to run next wednsday then back up, whats to be seen??. No doubt a good bookie could throw out a market early?. I can get Melbourne Cup pre post odds 6 months before they jump. Sorry never realised the Magic Millions in WA was so far above the rest of Australia. No doubt PR think it stops a nation =)) =)) =))

My only thought on a lack of markets would be a lack of form line. Fellow owners/breeders please don't take this the wrong way as I too own one of these 2yr olds but I have found it very very difficult to draw any form lines around this years 2yr olds as even some of the trainers have commented that it's tough. Horses coming near last then backing up and winning several days later, the fav last Sat being so so disappointing then a couple who have done what I would presume to be a real lead up of coming out winning/qualifying and then being put away for a quick spell before coming back out for a 'first up' crack.
I do think however, if you want to pinch one that this year is probably a good year to do so which is what I suspect many have done judging by the way they have qualified/gone about getting to the big day.

Why bother. Not worth the drama for an operator to go up at this stage.

I am amazed that you think fields and pre post markets are PR's fault. Please educate yourself!!!!

L, do you think bookies are bloody mugs?
you have been so secretive about your "hidden horse"...which we can all guess who it is & expect PUNTA or their colleagues to give u a price.
mate, you are in la la land and probably puffing on a funny cigarette....

A certain 2YO was pretty 'impressive' at trials today...

reckon a few came through last week to occy...and with the types of races coming up over the next month or two you'd expect that the good ones would start to rise to the top.. And with the pace that was on, on Saturday you probably made a good decision.. If it's who I'm thinking it is... Good luck over the next 4-6 weeks ;)

Will be interesting to see how many and more importantly which ones pull up stumps after Saturday...

I think from ours down should all go for a spell..the time was the thing that got us, but Saxophonist and G n E ran on well and One off the Wood did well to step up to the longer distance.. If they all pulled up well it'd be tempting to take them on a similar path to ours.. small break and back to work. Would be surprised if any of them went MM.

Was talking about this Sats race, some will be thinking it is the GF, others wont be leading into the race but the result will no doubt decide it for them in most cases...

sorry, focus was a bit self centered..

Reckon it would be the GF for the majority of them. As you said initially about the nice one or ones at trial today, most of the best are still on the way to the track..Don't know how anyone would expect the best to be out and about in the first dozen races of the season.. The ones that are running at the moment, are the ones that can. And the best of them are collecting a few dollars for the next prep.

  • octaviusoctavius    2,290 posts

It would be interesting to see how many plate winners, gimcrack/supremacy winners etc win in their first prep v 2nd prep where they race before the new year and spell and come back with more experience, and after going shinny etc...that is something easy enough to look at if you have time on your hands but wonder if it points to the 2nd prepers over time which would make sense to me...

  • octaviusoctavius    2,290 posts

I suppose you are working with such a small pool of those before the New Year that you couldn't deduct anything concrete from those numbers, but still it makes sense it would be beneficial...

  • RIORIO    14,902 posts

The small pool makes it hard in trying to get a trend..and also what constitutes a spell?

Some that don't go shiny but a ran for a race and get prize money are sometimes only freshened up and then kept in light work and either bought back for the MM or for the next round of quality races...but don't actually get a full break in the interim..

Others are given a break and bought back in the 'hope' that they are better... It is such a tough area.. To have personally failed in getting them to the track so often, I really think the early runners is a lot of luck...so if they can run, you put them out there no matter when it is.. And I don't think  it matters too much if it is the MM, the KP or a normal Saturday race... And at the slightest bit of a problem, put them away until they are late 2 or early 3yr old for the easy end of Belmont races.

But I still think the best 2yr olds are aimed at the races 4 weeks from now, as there is 2 or 3 nice races to win grouped together...and that is whether they ran before Xmas or haven't ran yet.. As you know Occy, some trainers can do as much work on their farms as a horse would do on the track, and then they can bring them to the track at this time of the year knowing that they have something. Rather than hoping.
