Thanks Spinking had no idea it was against a Jim Taylor mount either. Liked Taylor he was one of the most improved hoops I can remember was a little all over the shop as an apprentice but became an outstanding senior jockey, then a more than accomplished trainer. Great horseman.

I could send or drop it off, if of any interest

Thanks everyone too for their constant input. The 70's, 80's sound like a magical era of racing in the West. Plenty of great memories. I wonder when our next superstar WA horse will come. It was a shame Delicacy's career ended tragically short.

The 90's was also a good era of grand old horses such as Willoughby and Jacks or Better. Very tough horses of the time. If anyone has any images or content about these two gallopers, let me know.

That's true about Taylor Spinking...said a few words to him one day after his good mare Mettalic Storm won a race at Ascot..didn't know me from a bar of soap but had a chat. Think when he rode Moss Kingdom to victory in an Adelaide Cup for Frank Maynard only carried 46 or 47kg.

Jimmy rode Len Morton trained horse in a lead up to the Bunbury cup, form memory, it may have been the Pinjarra cup.

Burgess Queen a top class 2 year old, great 3 year old, but that was it, would get towelled up by Naional Boy every time they met, a real looker she was

Fairetha probably won 5 races, 2 Perth Cups,Kal Cup and a 2 mile race they use to run at Helena Vale. Laurel Hcp. He did race in 4 Perth Cups with a 2nd as well and went to Victoria and raced in an Australian Cup. Just a dead set 2 miler

Very good the photo of Detonator coming back to scale. Just looking at the crowd in the background what's interesting too is the crowd...mostly 40-50 year olds and a few in there 30s..that's the age bracket that racing has lost on course.It hasn't so much lost the young person , when attending the races as a 10 year old and through teenage years there were very very few kids on track...it was all the crowd in the above photo. How many kids in the photo ? Zero. So it's not so much the youth that has been lost on racetracks it's the 35 to 50 year olds that has declined drastically.

I've got the Pinjarra incident on tape but cant transfer it to a dvd because its a Betamax tape. I think it was one of Marks 1st rides in a race

The Melb race, seriously have a look at the head on, Groovers left elbow was practically in Mathews face. Took Pindi from 4 off the fence to on the fence. Starstruck head is turned sideways

Forget about the make up of the crowd, just cop the size of it.......the fact that there IS a crowd as opposed to friends and relations these days is the disturbing thing. And Detonator, what a horse for Len and Tommy....used to idolise him with his big weights and grandstand finishes, none better that his Easter Handicap win...I reckon I am in that crowd somewhere.

If you were a punter and wanted to watch any races, whether they be Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or anywhere else, you had to be on track. If you wanted to bet fixed odds, you had to be on track. Is it any wonder crowds were decent?

Recall an outstanding eastern states horse called Family Of Man winning at Pinjarra and in recent years have seen the race video and remember thinking blimey that's me near the fence..but buggered if can find the replay now.

Great day that was, fancy an eastern states champion racing at Pinjarra. A sight to behold.

Won two Kingston Towns did Family Of Man, a WA Derby and sandwiched in between the two KT's was victory in a Cox Plate...now that's not a bad horse to run at Pinjarra.

Detonator was a prolific winner in the mid seventies ? That's when I remember him.

Falcon might have meant Hughie Jamieson was in his late 60's. That looks a 70s photo for sure.

1976...the year he won the Bunbury Stakes carrying 67kg, and then the Easter Handicap with 60.5kg....defeating my cousins horse Warsend (Grant Wooton) ....fancy betting against the great horse......he came right down the outside fence and swamped Warsend who looked all over a winner....was half way to the collect queue!!!! Fantastic horse and trainer.

Does anyone remember an incident with Tom Pike & JJ Miller having a fight during a race? Gilt JJ rode Gilt Patten & don't know what Tom Pike was on. I remember seeing a photo taken from the back of the race and they were fighting. Maybe about 1973 or 1974? Does anyone have that photo or know the full story? I think Tom Pike wanted to put JJ over the fence. Don't know why. Anyone remember or have more details? What was the outcome & who won the race & where did those horses finish?

Hugh Jamieson is without a hat and in the brown cardigan. Don't think he was training at that stage maybe? I believe he had a brain aneurysm while in the UK. He did return to successfully training racehorses again though. Could it have been 1979?

he was certainly training in the mid 70's..took gilt pattern to Sydney. won a good race ridden by darby McCarthy..won another with billy camer up. I know cos I was there...

Black type there is no way that the bloke with the brown jumper no hat is Hughie jameson. For a start H.Jameson would have never attended a city meeting without a suit on. And if that fella stood up straight he would be to tall to be Mr Jameson

Ex harness trainer Ted Greig trained La Trice. Ted reckoned he never stopped looking at her makeup physically trying to discover what made her better than most horses. Came up with zilch....she just was and that was that he said.

I watched (freeloaded) Fair Sir win the first million dollar WA race from Laurie Connells private box at Ascot courtesy of a stable association. The crayfish and Crownies were nice.
