on who does racing depend

Having a beer with a 3 mates this afternoon  , the discussion turned to who racing depended upon  for its existence and future ,  at this point i will not disclose the other threes connection to racing but will say they are or have been well connected, it will be interesting to guage what PTT  crew thoughts are, in regard to this question?

    Now The corporate book makers...Who are totally reliant on the PUNTERS

    Up until the end of last year it was only the PUNTERS

    EDIT.....this opinion is in relation to the industry in WA

    Totally reliant on losing punters, winners get banned or restricted.

    @Spinking this quote is from a leading harness trainer in the U.S. and even though it's pacing related think it applies to racing as well.
    'This sport is all about gambling, it's not about making sure the drivers are happy or the trainers are happy it's about gambling and knowing that these guys that bet their two bucks are getting a fair shake.'

    If the "well connected" crew think anyone other than the punter is who racing is dependant on, they are part of the problem.

    As its racing, I want to put in a good word for the horses, we actually depend on them....and the breeders....and the trainers ...and the jockeys ....and the punters. For mine it is all interconnected ....remember those Venn Diagrams we did in Maths at school, racing is the bit in the middle!!

    But yes, I get the point that no punter, no money, no anything else. All I am saying is that in Utopia, all parties would be blissfully working together. Right, another scotch and off to the couch to continue dreaming.

    Don't remember the Venn Diagrams at all JJ. What did totally confuse me was that thing called the 'protractor' use to look at it and think what the hell is this! Haha still to this day wouldn't have a clue. Fortunately did know the difference between 7/2 , 7/4 ,13/8 and 10/9.

JJ your remark makes a lot of sense to me they are all intertwined and one does not exist . without the other except maybe the truly addicted punter who will finf anything to bet on

    Not really thats like saying without superannuation theres no stockmarket
    Bookmakers pay a levy
    A levy is no different to paying a commission to buy a house or commission on some other trade

    Bookmaker ??? Who puts the money in their bags to pay that levy. THE PUNTER.

    There are only 2 groups that across the board put in more than they take out. Punters and owners. Everyone else takes out.

    That said if the question is on who does racing depend, well obviously everybody because you can't have a race without breeders, trainers, jockeys, barrier attendants etc. Not sure we need bookies :)

    It's the Punter and the Punter only. It all starts here. If the punter stops punting the industry falls over. So long as the punter keeps punting the industry will survive in some form.

    The rest of the industry is a function of economics. If there is a demand for a product somebody will try to supply it for a profit. The only exception to this is owners as many do this as a social exercise however if we were racing for blue ribbons only rather than prizemoney rest assured the industry would die. There are not enough insane people out there to fork out for a racehorse for a guaranteed loss with no possible return of any description.

    Punters. End of story. There will always be people chasing the money that punters put in. Those people are......the rest of the industry. 
     Owners contribute too but they are punters of a different type.

    Lame you might as well add Uber/Taxi Drivers that ferry punters to and fro. How about the partner that subs the punter for the occasion during a lean spell. :D

    The sad thing as @FM said...The punter is the most under represented group in racing. It's difficult to get around that...but as @Rodent quoted Don Chipp earlier...'we have to keep the bastards honest'...somehow.
